GI Brought up Uceris today

Saw my GI today. He brought up me trying Uceris. Quick background...I have failed mtx, imuran, remicade, humira, most rectal meds.

I am currently on 10mg pred. now. He wants me to hold here for 2 weeks then go down by 2.5. I will see him in 5 weeks and at that point decide whether to try the Uceris.

The one thing that confused me was he said Uceris was approved by the FDA but not available until later this month or next month. So that does that mean it is not yet in production?

I know this is still a steroid and he explained the way it worked. I always bring my hubby to GI appts. Helps to have two people listen!

On another note I had a bone density scan last week b/c of all the pred use. I was all w/in a normal range and don't have to go back for 2 years. Just to continue on w/ my calcium and d supplements.

it is budesonide , the steroid in Entocort. It will have less side effect and damage to you body than Pred, but it will be very expensive name brand non-generic.

if I can't taper this year, I am going to ask for it.

IMO, better to taper in smaller increments than jump by 2.5mg from one day to the next.

My GI mentioned Uceris to me 2 days ago. I am doing well on mesalamines alone but if later I need to use steroids this is the one I would try first ( if covered by insurance). Budesonide is not new but this formulation is supposed to deliver medication in a more continuous fashion throughout the colon, worth a try.

This is available now, ask for the $25 prescription card, or look for it online. I am waiting for my new ins to start up next week then I will be switching to this, I have taken endocort for over a yr so I know side effects..which have been zero.
