If I have to take a trip on a particular morning (vacation, work) here is what I do.
The evening before I will eat very light and "safe." Probably just some scrambled eggs and toast (without any nuts or seeds). The next morning I would drink some strong coffee to "get everything out." Coffee has a tendency to do that. And then I would skip breakfast altogether. I'd take 2 immodium, 2 gasX, and maybe some Tylenol depending on how I felt.
Anyway that is what I do for emergency situations and it always works. On a day to day basis what I do - and you may not believe this - is when the urge first hits me in the morning I try to hold it as long as I can. One minute...2 minutes...5 minutes... What this does is help strengthen the kegel muscles, so each time that area gets a little stronger. Having had this colitis for so long those muscles can get really weak, making the urgency thing worse. Kegel excercises are out there but really boring to do.
People may disagree with me on the coffee, but I found it to help me "empty out" if you will...so then I don't have to worry about the rest of the day.
