The root cause of UC is the decreased strains of available intestinal good bacteria that supress the bad guys to minimal, or a balance, like a forest with balanced ecosystem, or savanna with right amount of varieties of animals to keep the balance.
I think the good case is C-Diff related colitis (colitis is colitis!), when people go through FMT (Fecal Microbiata Transplant), 93% greater cure rate via 1 enema of healthy donors stool, and 97% cure rate of 2 or more enema.
Australian doctor Borody reported in his articles taking 6 patients who were taking drugs, they did enema from donated healthy individuals and they cured UC, but I think Borody needs to repolish his methods or do more research to explain and convince medical communities.
I checked the forum with chronic C-Diff suffering patients, those patients were hooked on anti-biotics because as soon as they dont take antibiotic, their C-Diff comes back. Now C-Diff is curable with FMT even if antibiotics failed. Doctors know that the cure rate is that high, but the medical community still opts antibiotic to be the first goto solution, which puzzled me, because antibacteria is a poisen with side effects, where FMT does not have side effect at all. I think doctors love drugs even though if its bad for the patients.
The main reason for UC does not have the cure, is that pharmaceautical patent.
There used to be whats called triple antibacterial therapy called ATM (Amoxicillin, Tetracycline, Metronidazole) developed in Japan 6 yrs back, and 50-60% increase remission rate was achieved combined with other drugs (those patients they used for the trials were almost surgery state), they could get out of surgery state with antibiotics, so I am sure that the root cause of UC is the bacteria, and not auto-immune, genetic predisposition...and such. The imbalance of bacteria population cuases auto-immune disease. Its not additives of food intake cause UC or environment causes UC, but simply those factors cause imbalance of gut bacteria, which causes UC.
Now I know there are clinical trials in Canada that FMT is now being tested. There is a large institution established in McMaster univeristy just dedicated in finding the cure of UC quite recently, trying to find out what is it that some UCer get cured (yes cured!) from UC and some dont.
If you try to search Fecal Microbiota Transplant, even some news reported that some symptoms of diabetic patients get better. When fit and healthy donor's stool is implanted in fat and obese pre-diabetic patient, their blood count gets better and they no longer would be pre-diabetic stage.
So I think FMT would be the cure, except in the medical community, doctors would be skeptic to FMT because its icky and not supported by evidence.
Peptic Ulcer's, there is a cure now, but they didnt know back then which bacteria contibuted (it was chronic illness just like UC, needing surgery and leading to perforated stomach). People thought stress, spicy food and other factors contributed and they even thought taking anti-acid would solve (well they didnt), but two doctors effort was not recognized and it took 10 yrs (until the drugs for anti-acid, first go to treatment of Peptic Ulcer expired) to prove that bacteria Pylori was the cause.

So for UC to go to cure stage it would be a long long road, and what is the first line of go-to treatment for UC? Because that go-to treatment has to be diminished or drug patent needs to be expired for the possible cure to come to a surface or even be considered a main stream.
I still think FMT is the cure.
