Do I tell?

So, after signing a lease for 6 months last week, my housemate declared shes thousands of pounds in debt and has to leave. (Shes crazy)

So I placed an ad online and after 3 days found a lad who wants to move in. i've house shared for years and lived with strangers at uni so thats no issue BUT recently lived with friends who know when Laura screams "I NEED THE LOO" it means get out the bathroom NOW! And all the fun details, this new guy is only 23 and moves in at the end of the month.

i'm certainly not going to say anything before he's in, but should I mention in passing when he's here or just wing it? Im thinking of winging it, seeing how it goes, after all he's never even left home so he could just think that girls go to the toilet a lot.

With work I just mentioned bits of it and as the months went on they got the idea, my supervisor and work nurse know the details but nobody else really

I really thought the stress of it all might make me worse but three days until finding somebody to move in was pretty stress free..

My first flare, I was in a dorm with multi-stall bathrooms, but my second two flares were when I was living with three guys (I'm a woman) and sharing a bathroom with two of them. One of them would take 30-minute showers in the morning, spending a total of 45 straight minutes in there, usually when I was also trying to get ready for work, or when I desperately needed to use the bathroom.

I would knock on the door if I was going to be late for work/have an accident, and he'd say he'd be right out ... and then come out 5-10 minutes later. It was really stressful, and I didn't ever say anything.

Now, I live with my partner, who knows that when I need the bathroom, I need it right away. He's sometimes running out of the bathroom with shaving cream covering half his face, or shampoo still in his hair, and he never complains. It's very sweet!

If I were still living with my dude roommates, I think I would have had to eventually say something, since I've gotten much sicker in the past few months than I was when I was living with them.

My partner's family has had to be let in on my illness, since I've stayed with some of them before, and because we take vacations together. What we've told them, and what might be the best thing to tell your new roommate, is that I have a chronic illness that requires me to have constant access to a bathroom, and that there might be some instances where someone else is in the bathroom when I need to use it. That pretty much solved any issues I had.

As a "thank you for being understanding," I often offer to pay for toilet paper, especially when I'm mostly around dudes who use toilet paper less often on a regular basis.

If I am that lad, I would like to know. I have also lived with 2 girls and when they screamed, I need bathroom (mainly because they are getting late for their party), I would get out in a minute :)

Jokes aside, be clear to him that you have a condition where you need restroom quite often and if you say, you need to go that means, he has to leave his job as it is and get out. Do stress that you are not joking and this is a serious thing. Although you will try not to bother him all the time, you can not be so sure.


A solution if it may work, I started getting up early (and of course going to bed early). Thus, I get about 2-3 hours of window in the morning to make 4 to 5 trips before DW gets up.

Yeah, tell. But ask him to please not discuss it with anyone! Private health issue, seriously.

I also think it's better for you to tell him in advance. You could say that you take medicine for a chronic intestinal problem, but sometimes it doesn't work that well so you might need the loo all of a sudden. So i got talking to new housemate, music, films, ex's, health, he has crohns! Result or what, we're even on the same drugs. Couldnt have been easier if id planned it

Sounds like he was going to have to tell you the same thing you needed to tell him! That's great! (Great that things worked out, not great that you're both sick, of course!)

Partner = romantic partner. I prefer saying that to "boyfriend" because we've been together a while, live together, planning on getting married/starting a family, and "boyfriend" makes me feel like I'm in high school or something. Plus, I like gender neutral titles--one of the reasons I'm going for a doctorate, so I can go by "Dr." and see how many people assume I'm a dude :D
