Augmentin - What's up with that?

I have had a very bad sore throat for over a month. Didn't seem bad enough to go to the doc and when it started to go into bronchitis a couple of weeks ago  I took a zpack that I already had in the house just for such occasions. Stopped the bronchitis in it's tracks but sore throat continued. I figured if there was a chance that it was strep the antibiotic would have wiped it out so I have been assuming it was a bad virus. Lots of head congestion draining down my throat and plugging up my ears but nose has never been running. Wasn't getting any worse but never got much better either. Finally I decided to break down and go to my regular family doc. He takes one look in my mouth and jumps back saying I have a very nasty strep throat infection. Didn't even do a strep test. Gave a prescrip for Augmentin. Didn't argue because I'm getting very tired of living with a sore throat. Upped my probiotics but was not thrilled about an antibiotic messing up my UC. Zpack gave me diarrhea the first day and then sort of returned to "normal" after that. I was fully expecting my UC to make me very miserable while on Augmentin, even with the increased probiotics. Amazingly my UC has gotten MUCH better and I know it is not because of the increased probitotics. I'm astounded. The wheels in my head have started turning concerning Augmentin and UC but the wheels haven't spit out any clear information yet but my inner voice is telling me that there is a clue in all this somewhere. I have never taken antibiotics for my UC and the ones that are usually mentioned are the triple antibiotic combo. Seems like most times whenever Augmentin is mentioned in connection with UC it is bad news. Anyone have any thoughts?

My wheels are wondering if a bad gut bug has been responsible for my UC all this time and the Augmentin is killing it. I want to go down this road. Just don't know if it is yet another dead end or not.

Augmentin gave me severe Gastritis when I stopped it and put me in ED.. Painful

it;crap and miss with abx to treat uc according to our GI as you don't know which one will work for which patient, it's a shot in the dark - you got lucky and found one that works, that's good!

gary, sorry that's happening. i noticed the same thing when getting off vancomycin. my UC cramps came back and i was like darn. only thing that has helped has been prescript assist probiotic. it's designed for people who have been on antibiotics.

I'm just using VSL as my only probiotic so that's what I increased. I try to stay away from fiber as I usually always have formed stools and too much fiber gives me horrible gas. I'm doing a little better today but the formed stools I had been having are a thing of the past with this antibiotic. Haven't seen any blood. Hopefully I will return to "normal" after the antibiotic. I was really sick of having that sore throat.

banana: I looked up your probiotic and decided to give it a try in addition to my vsl. I just ordered it from Amazon. Hopefully it will get here before my antibiotic runs out.
