Son in hospital after fecal transplant

My 10 year old son has been in a flare for over a year - at the last colonoscopy in November his inflammation was moderate to severe and throughout the colon. He was intolerant of azathioprine and so has been on prednisilone all that time. Docs have tried him on methotrexate and remicade with no success. Has just moved to 6mp and is slowly working up to a higher dose while staying on the steroids. However the docs are not optimistic and think he is likely ro be facing a colectomy if the 6mp doesn't work. I got our consultants reluctant approval to try at home FTs and attempted our first one last Saturday. On Sunday my son started feeling ill with an aching side, and high temperature and loss of appetite. This continued till he was admitted to hospital on thurs. we are still here. Urine and stool tests have not revealed an infection but docs think it is likely. His symptoms are continuing despite IV antibiotics so doc says it could possibly be the inflammation of the IBD itself.

Anyway, I feel terrible that I could have passed him an infection. I had all the screening tests recommended and all were negative. I realise the timing could be a coincidence and it might not be related to the FT but it does leave me very wary about trying again. Has anyone else experienced these kind of symptoms after an FT? Don't beat yourself up. You made the best decision you could at the time. Things don't always work out.

Docs have just been in to say no sign of a bacterial infection, although they won't absolutely rule one out. They say it could be a virus or symptoms of the inflammatory disease itself.

So sorry to hear about your son. Did you ask the doctor if it could be a reaction to the 6mp?
De La Rosa, as a parent myself who decided to do FT for my son after his worst flare the decision to try FT was an easy one given the alternatives. If you research the topic you will find it is quite safe (provided the donor is tested) and certainly no more harmful than the side effects of some drugs. I, like Bex17, had the backing of our GI which tells me that there must be some proof of it's safety; although obviously the risk is always there.

sounds exactly like my FT experience. i got much worse after my fecal transplants- high fever, nausea, shakiness, lots of diarrhea. i did 8 of them and after that, i couldn't take it anymore. i assumed it was from my donor's bacteria not meshing well with mine. that could be the case with you and your son.

i didn't go to the hospital just because my doctors knew about what i was doing and my symptoms leveled off after a few weeks.

Banana girl sorry to hear that. Does sound quite similar. I had really high hopes of the FTs - I have always had very healthy bowels and we share a blood group - I had all the screening tests costing over £1000 (we are in UK). All clear. Just don't know if I dare attempt another one now.

There's a lady posting on the Facebook FMT group whose husband did well with her own donation but got really sick when they tried the daughter's. Does Borody or anyone write about children? A 10 year old has a different bacteria spectrum than an adult don't they so I suppose an ideal donor would be another child?

Sounds awful, so sorry it didn't work out for him. Hoping for you that the new meds help him.

No, a child's flora is 'developed" after the age of two. They recommend adult donors with children and do this all the time in the case of recurrent Cdiff (sometimes with toddlers).
