I would just echo that sometimes surgery can be a way to get your life back.
My mother had her colon removed probably close to 30 years ago at Rochester, Minnesota, and she had a J-pouch procedure (relatively new at that time.) She wore an appliance for several months and then had a second surgery to reconnect her plumbing.
She has led a very, very active, fulfilling life without her colon. She has had a little trouble now and again with pouchitis, but it doesn't come close to comparing to the UC flares and is quite easily treated with suppository meds.
I can't imagine you and your poor son dealing with this level of disease. I hope you get some good news soon.
