Latest direction in medical research. I like where they are taking all this information and the direction they are going in. The research sounds pretty diverse.

Thanks for posting. Good to see this: "specific focus on the role of diet" - after 30 yrs of docs saying, diet makes no difference to ulcerative colitis and me and a bunch of other patients, saying, hello, yes it does, at least when in flare, finally they are moving the intransigent it would seem

Don't count on diet part. CA could not even pass prop 37 so I have least expectations from other states. NYC mayor is trying to do something but he is called a nanny (and what not). The processed food lobby is too strong to get healthy food in the stores. Genetically modified cattle feed has shown ulcerations in cattle intestines.

For example, take Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, from name it looks like a public interest group interested in educating people. But if you dig deeper, the sponsors are the processed food corporations those use exactly the same materials in their products, these guys are trying to 'educate'. So how are you going to trust something?

Although direction is good, I am not too sure if they have enough political and money muscle power to fight with companies like Monsanto or Kraft foods.

The role of diet could have anything to do from allergies, artificial products, poisons, dieting in general, etc. What's in our food definitely has huge impact. There's no link with healthy eating vs nonhealthy eating...as proven here many times.

I think the most relevant topic would be "Defining clinically relevant subgroups of IBD patients". After seeing all of the diverse experiences here at HealingWell, both in terms of what causes flares, and what helps. I’ve come to the conclusion that UC is not just one disease, but a family of diseases with similar symptoms. If that idea has merit, then treatments could be better tailored to each individual.

My experience is that treatment is currently more or less a shotgun endeavor, Just try something and see if it works, if it does good, if not try something else. Wouldn’t it be much better to isolate a “subgroup”, and tailor treatment to what works best for that subgroup?

It's about time someone pulled their head out of their ass and started looking at diet in regards to IBD.

I believe diet is the key. All this immuno-neuro inflammation response is to the foods that our guts don't like. We all have different floura of bacteria in our guts and thus have different experiences with trigger and safe foods.

They should definitely identify cultures in the gut that are anti-inflammatory and mucosa friendly. Then we can figure out which foods decrease their numbers or functioning and see if eliminating those foods would help in maintaining remission with standard maintenance drugs.

It's also very possible some people got UC by eating something healthy that they shouldn't have. Their bodies could have had an allergic type reaction to eating artichoke hearts, causing the immune system to mess up and give them UC. People just always assume that it was the burger and fries and doughnut that gave someone UC and not something that is supposedly healthy. I'm still a big believer that in most cases diet didn't have a darn thing to do with causing UC but that the damage caused to the colon does affect UC and therefore diet can ease symptoms but not cure. This goes hand in hand to what wodin and I posted, that there may be a subset of IBD cases where diet was the cause and subsets of people who got IBD different ways.

Worse than that, while everybody was busy arguing over 'teh ghey' marriage last week, the president signed HR 933 which has been dubbed the Monsanto Protection Act, protecting the company and like corporations from litigation. The senator who wrote the bill "worked with Monsanto to craft the language in the bill." I'm sure that was all on the up and up.

Yeah, it doesn't matter if Frankenfoods are found to cause all autoimmune disease, they're here to stay.

Excellent Levi. That whole gay marriage bs was created as a diversion for what was really going on. Nobody seems to care about this and avoid this topic like the plague. The most evil company on the planet, who's products like Round Up, are banned by a number of countries in the world. It is now legal for them to continue there illegal practices of poisoning our lives.. They are now above the law, thanks to our most corrupt system on the planet. BTW, it's Monsanto's pesticides that have led to more digestive diseases than any other time in history.
