You'll understand because you also prefer to watch the c-scope monitor. I didn't get to see a minute of it because a nurse-anesthetist knocked me out completely with Propofol. Rats!!!!!!!! I feel unjustly deprived by that stupid medical center where my gastro is affiliated. For decades my c-scopes were done by gastro with 1 assistant and things always went fine. This time 3 nurses "assisted", and I was out cold 'til some time after arriving in the recovery room, plus tethered to bp monitor on right side & IV drip on left. Grrrrrrrrr. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Sorry you missed the monitor. It's about the best part.

They really go overboard these days, and I'm not sure it ends up with better patient care. Just more beeps and boops for someone to look at.

I never had EKG leads for a scope until lately. I objected strenuously, to no avail. I have a weird nerve thing on my EKG, and I told them I'd really lose my temper if someone suggested I go to the ER, which has happened in the past.

I've never been given the opportunity to watch the scope or monitor. Am I missing out?

Sherry, did not have a chance to speak afterward to gastro, who later e-mailed me that things looked generally good. (No polyps so far while on Colazal, yay!) And I suffered less from prep this time than with past purges-- thanks to Forum members' info!!!!!!! **** ipoop, yes, you missed out on some interesting sights in the magic tunnel (colon). For example, I have watched my gastro literally dodge blobs of stringy mucus that suddenly slid down from above toward the scope-- real clinical skill there! **** LOL, SIBBY! Now THAT would be a pure disaster ... could you see my insurance agreeing to replace the med? ... thanks for sharing. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I'd raise royal hell for sure, because it's your decision, not theirs.

Good to hear the scope visually was good...

They should have told you what they were going to use for the med and asked what you preferred.
I think the propofol is just easier for them....NOT for the patient.

Yes, watching is the best part.

Hope the biopsies results are good as will...

I have no clue what I got....but it's resistable if you put your mind to it....if you relax, you're done...

If you keep talking and stuff, you can resist the drug...

lol you know too many names...I don't know any of them. It starts off like you had too many beers....then it goes from there.

propofol...nah, you won't be able to fight it. The others...yes, because I get them and have never fallen asleep except once for a short while after my dislocated my shoulder accident. But I did wake-up during the scope, but on the way back. I was so ticked, but needed the sleep I guess..lol.

Raising hell would have gotten me nowhere-- because our urban hospitals are governed by committees that impose their regulations on affiliated doctors. Some committee creeps decided that full anesthesia must be administered for c-scopes!!!! I HATE THOSE JERKS, whoever they are. (See above comment by Seconder who tried to protest having EKG leads pasted on during scope, which I also detest.) I DID say: "Now I won't be able to watch the monitor!" which then caused the nurse-anesthetist to glare at me with hatred right before she knocked me out. That Propofol stuff is fast-acting, geez. The only good thing I can say about it is that it didn't mess with my memory. When I woke up in Recovery I immediately remembered everything that had happened in the right sequence. Versed/Demerol could leave me a bit foggy & is now being disparaged for use on seniors owing to that likely side effect. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Wow, that's for sure crap for a c-scope...certainly not necessary, and should be an OPTION. But I guess they want to whip patients in and out without any fuss.

Interesting about the leads being applied before the scope as well. I have the finger pulse thingie, but no leads.

I hate the versed...I don't like the feeling afterward from it. I wish I only got Demerol (love that stuff!) but now it's the fentanyl. I told my doc I don't want the Versed...I want to remember it all, not forget. lol.

I'm having my last scope with this doc in Oct...24 years, sigh. He's not doing them at the hospital any longer with all the equipment/beds, etc at the clinic. I preferred the hospital...but whatever.

Looking forward to hearing your results when you get them in...

They give me versed and my doc says I talk too much while watching the screen.
No after effects and I don't get knocked out, all good. But my doc gets tired of answering the same questions over & over again, so now he only talks to my partner : ).

Sorry you couldn't watch - I have slowly built up to less sedation over the years. Your experience sounds quite different from the UK where they encourage sedative free it seems - not that I would go for that as it always hurts me a lot (told I have difficult "bends" to get around in my colon), family and friends of mine have had it sedative free though, particularly for routine scopes where there is no known inflammation. I had a gastroscopy sedative free recently which was fine.

I think they don't like sedation here because then they cannot allow you to leave without an escort or you have to stay overnight if no escort can be found and that gets complicated, much easier if patients don't hang about blocking beds!

Best to get the choice of course - there have been complaints in the support group newsletter from people refused sedation.

From my experience with unsedated Flex S-scopes, I'm perfectly happy with not watching the C-scope. Besides, the euphoria upon waking makes it worth it; even the prep!

The only euphoria I've ever felt after c-scope came from my arrival back home!!!!!!!!!! **** I agree, London Lurker, that we should have a choice of sedatives-- especially when in remission and the scope is being done for routine monitoring rather than a UC crisis. **** Quincy, I'll definitely let you know about final report-- most likely I'll get it in early May at next office visit with gastro. You're no doubt right that Propofol has come into favor because the endoscopy center wants to speed patients through the procedure, rather than facilitating any meaningful communication with attending staff. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Certainly not appropriate to totally sedate patients for procedures..but I suppose if it's deemed more "helpful"...maybe more doctors will be doing it. which totally sucks.

Quincy-- received a copy of gastro's procedural report stating that "the colonoscopy was performed with difficulty due to significant looping". Have you ever encountered that term? I looked it up online; seems that it refers to situation where colon pushes back on scope head so that it cannot be advanced! Well, no wonder that happened after the stupid endoscopy center foisted things on me that delayed the start of procedure & made me uncommonly nervous. Gastro knew how to deal with it & got all the way into terminal ileum, though. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

hi OH...sorry for the late response...I was busy yesterday and not on here last evening/night.

I've not heard of looping in the sense you're meaning...I would automatically think of it being not straight in the areas that are supposed to be straight, or there is a more like a U shape where it shouldn't be.

but if I do find something on it, I'll post it. Strange you've not had that term mentioned in the past....nor has your GI encountered problems with your scopes in the past.

I think it'll be good to find the reason it happens so that you might use it for support to not be put under the next time...that would be perfect!

When do you get the biopsies results back? hope all is good.

Was it you who mentioned your colon was shorter now than it was due to the inflammation?

You're welcome! Yes, I'm the member who reported lengthwise shrinkage of colon over time. You're absolutely right in stating that there was no past problem of "looping"-- so this must have occurred due to Endo Center futzing. Gastro was standing at opposite end of procedure room when staff simultaneously turned me to the left & knocked me out. Betcha my legs were somewhat doubled up instead of right extended over left as in Rowasa-insert position & gastro didn't realize 'til scope got underway. Procedure notes state that change of sedation, change of my position, hand pressure, & lavage were then needed to complete scope. For sure that Endo Center cannot be trusted, especially compared to gastro's past arrangement. Too many cooks stirring the broth in this place-- rather than 1 experienced & trusted assistant in the former location. Grrrrrrr. And they're secretive about WHO is actually in charge of that dept. ; I wanna find out & give that vile person a piece of my mind! / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

wow, that's pretty bad when the doc's notes state that you weren't even positioned correctly before the scope. That could have even resulted in perforation. Definitely pursue the enquiry regarding the WHY. As well...state to your GI you'll never be knocked out AGAIN!!! ever for a c-scope.

In truth, i'd be using the f-bomb a lot and I'd probably walk out if I was being forced to be knocked out for a c-scope at the insistence of the "staff".

With "suffering" the prep process requirement, the least we can have is nice drugs and a monitor to watch. it's personal satisfaction to know what's going on in there....

Keep me posted for sure as to what you find out. It's your right to post a complaint and find out what you're going to do the next time. You get them once a year now?

We shouldn't be awkward or fractious patients. We should defer to the superior knowledge of the learned medical professionals, and put our lives into their capable hands.

They know what's best for us.
