Hello-

I have UC since 2011. Have had a remission for 14 months since then on Asacol HD 4800mg daily. Had a flare in Dec 2012 lasted a month but seemed to go away with rowasa.

I am worried because I don't know if this is normal---do others while in remission have "bad days" of frequency and blood and occassional abdominal pain?

The blood part scares me and want to know if others experience random blood as well.

Our symptoms and treatment are very similar. I don't know if I'd call it "normal," per se...but your "normal" person doesn't have IBD.

I don't think it should be a big concern if the blood is only occasional, but you might want to ask your GI doctor. Getting a flex sig to understand whether it is a concern or not can't hurt (in the long run at least!)

Thank you sfc425 for your response! Yes it does look like we are on similiar treatments. I am thinking about adding Boswellia to my regimine.

I have days where I go more which is usually attributed to food or stress but then I had the occasional bad days before I had UC. Bleeding though I do not have unless I am flaring or having hemmie issues. Bleeding is a big red flag for me if it isn't attributed to my hemmies.

Are you still taking the Rowasa nightly?

If you are having occasional days with some urgency & blood, that to me says your meds are not controlling your disease well. Increase the frequency of the Rowasa or increase your oral meds dose (although you are already at the upper end of dose from what I know) or both, until a true remission is achieved.

I skipped two days in a row of my evening Asacol hd dose last week thinking since I was in remission it would be okay. The Rowasa I did during the flare in Dec 2012-Jan 2013 but did a few Rowasa's in the past week just to be sure this doesn't turn into a full blown flare. But it had me wondering, is occassional blood par for the course? Thanks for your responses I am so worried!

Remission means no symptoms. That includes blood.

On one of my scopes several years ago my GI found rectal inflammation. I'd been feeling pretty good, hadn't seen blood in a while, but I was passing mucous occasionally. He asked me if I knew that I had inflammation in the rectum even without him telling me. Honestly, I had kind of suspected it. You have to learn how to read your body's signals and if there is still inflammation in the rectum it has to be treated, and treated until it is truly gone, not just "better."

Get back on that Rowasa and keep using it until you don't see blood, you don't see mucous, you don't have urgency and you don't have gas.

Thank you Kazbern-I definitely suspect rectal inflammation. And am suprised that just 2 days of lowered Asacol dose could bring this on?! At any rate, back to the Rowasa.

No, I doubt the skipped oral meds have anything to do with the rectal blood. But the abdominal pain and frequency? Maybe.

You should consult with your GI before doing anything. He/she may want to take a look at you or recommend something else. Can't ever hurt to just give them a call if you suspect something may be wrong.

My GI's receptionist has come to know and like me over the past few months. How flattering!
