I am now looking at my diet as well, if IBD is going to happen then I am not going to be so strict anymore.
I dumped my diet and my doctor.
If your sitting in the hospital then you have some time to research. Take a look at the Resistant starch diet. I could not taper pred for surgery without bleeding. Then I read about
RS healing the colon by creating SCFA - butyrate. It began working immediately and despite being on blood thinners I dropped prednisone faster than ever without bleeing. Went down from 20mg to zero in less than 2 weeks. Day 4 of 0.00 today.
There are many benefits of RS which is considered a third type of fiber. I have an extensive thread on it here at healingwell.com. I am free and clear of prednisone and I dropped Lialda as I tapered because I suspected it was worthless ( for me ).
I was using RS type 1, now I use RS type 2 - just received a 5 lb bag of HI-MAIZE type 2 and am dumping spoonfuls into drinks and baking with it. I eat whatever I want too, I baked almond poppy seed muffins with 1/2 cup of sugar across 5 muffins. RS diet does its job on insulin resistance and satiation too I don't crave sweets, they kind of turn me off now.
BMs are vastly improved, solid logs, not perfect yet but RS is supposed to correct the flora and heal and THICKEN the mucosal lining. So over time I expect to improve. I also cut out nitrates which destroy B1.
