Bleeding after colonoscopy

Hi everyone. Just wondering if anyone has had this happen or has any insight on how to determine whether bleeding after a colonoscopy is from Hemorrhoids, or a perforation? I have Hemorrhoids and they bleed often. Though not daily. I had my colonoscopy on Thursday, and last night and today when I've gone to the bathroom, which isn't much at this point..I'm having bleeding (bright red drips into toilet). Same as when my Hemorrhoids bleed. But having had the colonoscopy and being told to call the office if I have more than just a tiny bit of blood, has me concerned. I'm still kinda gassy and uncomfortable, but nothing major. They did take 3 biopsies. And as most of you know, the prep is rough on the bottom!! it was aggravated during cleanout. but i dont have hemorrhoid pain now. just the bleeding! Any input would be appreciated!

I have always bled right after a colonoscopy. In your case, they took 3 biopsies and you mentioned you had hemmies-I would have been surprised if you didnt bleed. My GI told me it was very common to bleed right after because of all the inflammation, etc from the procedure.

Make sure you eat "easy on the colon" foods and give it a few days. Obviously, if it gets worse, call your Dr., but your description does not sound out of the ordinary IMHO.

I bled so much after my last one that I went to the ER. It was that much. I kept calling my GI. But they never seemed very worried. Over the course of a couple of days it subsided. Scared the crap out of me though. When at the ER they checked my blood levels and everything was fine.

Thank you for the replies. I'm eating soups and jello for a few days and medicating the bottom. I just don't want to work myself up with worry. I will call my doctor on Monday. I hate weekends for this...lol

I was bleeding after my last colo too. I brought it up to the nurse right away and she told me to watch it and if it gets too bad to call my GI. The bleeding went back to the normal amount later.

Maybe a day or two. Hard to say because I was bleeding on a regular basis anyway.

only 3 biopsies? I get 30 - 36 throughout all my colon.

For 3 or 30, it will take up to 4 days to stop bleeding. Are you having mucus as well?

What meds are you on for UC?

They told me he stopped 3 times for biopsies, and that I would have some extra air in there. And could possibly have a small amount of blood. I have left sided UC, considered mild. I take sulfasalazine 500mg. morning and night.

I just had my yearly colonoscopy just over a week ago (lots of biopsies and one polyp) and it took 4 days for the bleeding to appear to stop. Although I was in remission before the procedure, the toilet was so full of blood after going that I could not see my stool in the toilet for three of the four days.

This is consistent with my past years experiences.

1000 mg sulfasalazine isn't really a treatment dosage for UC...you should, however, discuss appropriate treatment options with your doctor...including rectal meds.

Probably the prep further irritated your hemmies. You should get back on track soon. Where I get mine done they always say to beware of fever or severe pain following 24 hrs after c-scope; those are indications to contact the doctor immediately. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I always bleed a good bit after colonoscopies. Every single time I freak out and my hubby reminds me that I freak out every time ;) I always have biopsies done and a few times I have had polyps removed. The bleeding usually goes away after a few days.
