I am really new to all this so I am kind of confused. I thought people with UC had lots of diarrhea. It is so weird. I am diagnoisd with UC and I also have camplyebacter so I should be having diarrhea like crazy but all of a sudden I am so costipated I am miserable. My bowels have not moved in 4 days. I know it is not because I got cleaned out with the colonoscopy prep because they couldn't even finish the colonoscopy because I was not cleaned out at all. The only thing I have done new is start cortofoam. Has anybody else had that side effect with the cortofoam? Yesterday I had to have an MRI with contrast (IV and drink) and I think that just made it worst. When I breath deep I can hear and feel really loud gurggling. I am afraid to take a laxative because I don't want to aggrivate my UC. Any suggestions?

I don't know if I can answer all and don't know about the bacteria. However I can tell you that if most of your inflammation is at the bottom of the colon than constipation like symptoms can very likely happen. I know it is strange, but often flares will start that way (constipation) and than if not treated can move up the colon and than you have D. They also heal backwards...in other words, once the D resolves you will go back to C for a bit until the rectal inflammation is dealt with. I hope that will shed a little light. This dd is so strange. (and annoying!

My flares mostly consist of major constipation (and passing only blood and mucus). I like cortifoam. For me, it is the easiest of the rectals to use. My inflammation is fairly low so it is what I typically start with.

My GI has okayed miralax for the occasions I feel like i really need to use a laxative.

I do tend to get constipation with my UC which is just as bad as have the dreaded D. In fact personally I think its worse. You feel like crap and don't go and then if you have hemmies when you do finally go it aggravates the hemmies. No fun.

Make sure your drinking plenty of water. I also drink apple juice when I feel backed up and I will slowly add in some metamucil. (If you add too much you will get REALLY gassy and bloated). I do the metamucil with my 5 year old too and it does keep her going. I will not take a laxative.

Are you on an antibiotic for the campylobacter?

When was your c-scope? What prep did you use?

Try eating some steamed sweet potato. Make it extra moist so you can practically mash it. Do not add anything to it-- such as fat. It's a very nutritious veggy with gentle fiber action that helps me whenever King Colon turns sluggish. Also, drink plenty of plain water throughout the day to improve hydration in the colon. The cortifoam itself should not cause C problems, but it can be hard to adjust one's diet to improve either C or D-- mostly a trial & error process as we UCers experience a lot of individual differences in reaction to foods. / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Yes I am on zithromax for 7 days. My colonoscopy was 5 days ago. I used a 3 day Miralax prep because I cannot tolerate the other prep. Truthfully the only prep that has ever worked for me is the pills because I have a motillity problem that is neurological. but my new GI will not prescribe them.

you can't do the gallon preps at all? wonder if a half-lytely plus the miralax could work? half a gallon might be OK for you?

I can't even swallow one ounce without vommiting even when I take nausea medication first. The prep I did this time was miralax and lot of laxitives and water no ffod for three days. I could not believe how much stuff came out but it still was not enough. It's a brain thing my food travels super slow.

plus the meds you're on can slow the digestive tract.

Doesn't help to have no food for 3 days...slower even more.

What about pico salex?

what is pico salex? I hadnt thought about the not eting 3 days. I guess it did add to the problem.
