Colonoscopy causing problems

Hi! Haven't been here for so long since I have been in remission nearly 5 years. A couple of problems with bowels but mostly IBS. NO bleeding or pain.
Anyway, now my doctor thinks I should have a followup colonoscopy - I guess routine to check for polyps.
Has anyone here had a flare caused by this test? I do not need that. I took steroids, etc. for 5 months to get this UC into remission - I am 73.

when was your last scope?

I flared from a scope a few years ago. no fun, but I wasn't in remission then. my last scope, done while I was in remission, did not cause any flare.

I also flared from a scope. At 73, how is your overall health aside from the UC?

My obesity is my worse problem. I had one knee replaced and due one more this fall.
I do not take anything for UC but prilosec for GERD.
I live alone and hire out anything I can't do.
Took two vacations this winter.
I have hypertention and arthritis!

In November I had a colonoscopy due to incontinence. (no bleeding at all) I was cutting classes to get to a bathroom in school because i would be so close to having an accident.(embarassing) After that colonoscopy i went into the biggest flare of my life. (blood and lots of it!) doctor put me on methotrexate which made me worse and wouldnt give me steriods. (switched doctors since than) I dont know what caused it, but i switched doctors since then and had a colonoscopy again(where i was then put on remicade) and my symptoms didnt relapse from that colonoscopy)

elaine - so wonderful to see you. I don't know how a colonoscopy will effect you but I think it's a good idea to get checked out. Hopefully things stay calm - i think most of the time they do.

Try adding in some probiotics to help your gut before and after the scope. Might help. I just recently had a scope and had some looser stool for a few days but I didn't flare and I was worried I would too.

Hi Elaine...welcome back! Awesome to hear you've been doing so well for so long!

I'd definitely have the scope since you've had UC for a long while and because of your age...and you haven't had one in 5 years. If all is good...you won't need one for probably another 3 - 5...

Anytime I've had a scope and flared, I was already showing mild inflammation during the scope. Mind you, in part, it could be because of the prep, but I would have had some symptoms previous.

Can you use any of the steroid suppositories? Ask the doc for some to use right after the scope.

What prep did you use in the past...some cause less problems,...I'm biased, in favour of the gallon (non-flavoured) preps.

So good to hear from you too. I realize I should have the scope. Give me name of a prep I can finish without throwing up. Yes, I keep the suppositories and foam just in case - use them for a couple nights when I get that "iffy" feeling. I still have bouts of nausea but no doc can give me an answer. Had right knee replaced and plan on left one maybe fall. That was not fun-

Hey Elaine! I had a scope in October of 2011. I'd been in remission for about 2.5 years by that point and made it through the scope without any problems.

We're sort of neighbors now! I live in the Finger Lakes area. ;)

Fruitgirl - yes, I live just north of you near Oneida Lake. Happy to read that you are also free of symptoms.
Let us just hope all continues that way for both of us.
