Wow, guys thanks for all your responses,
"Why haven't any of you asked what meds the OP is on or has tried?"
I'm a bit slow with the shorthand but if 'the OP' means me I'm on asacol MR 4.8g a day, I was on this for a month, the doc got over excited about constipation, I think, and told me I was in remission, and put me down to 2.4g but I was still geting a lot of blood, which I may not have portrayed as accurately as I might, I guess. I thought it would continue to get better, it didn't so I went back, so he's put me back up to the original dose. I think he wanted to put me on steroids, but I absolutely have to avoid these as I'll lose my medical for work.
I've got five weeks to get better before I have to see him again! I've only been on the higher dose for a week and he said to give it two, so I'll see how it goes, but so far no great improvement.
I do know you can't put a time limit on it, and the most important thing is getting better..... He did suggest another drug which you have to have once weekly blood tests for to check for side effects for the first week or so which sounded miserable.
I take probiotics and vit B.
I started eating wheat again as I saw no improvement from not eating it. The thing is how do you know which omission is playing a part?
I gave up smoking in Jan, the doc said that was why I now have symptoms, although I've had mild symptoms in the past in hindsight, soooo, if smoking stops the symptoms, why don't we all smoke during a flare up, get rid of the symptoms then give up again? I know this sounds ridiculous, but would it work? Perhaps the symptoms would come back immediately after you gave up, but maybe not if you're on a maintenance dose?
Has anyone got a link between allergic reactions and flare ups? I have asthma and eczema (the later mildly) and a couple of nights before my flare up in Jan I had a massive allergic reaction to a face cream, which was supposed to be for sensitive skin, my face swelled so much I could hardly see out from under my eyelids! Since then I've had to stop using all face creams apart from one, which still makes my skin blotchy, but not as much as the others... it seems the worse my symptoms are the worse my blotchy skin is, is this linked do you think, or my imagination?
What about alcohol, does anyone else find it a complete no,no?
I get that diet doesn't cause colitis or cure it as such, but will hopefully reduce the symptoms. I do eat a reasonable diet, particularly now... I've ordered the SCD book, and some almond flour so I guess I'll see how it goes.... although, will I know if it's the diet or the drugs.... or neither? I guess I'll wait to see. Waiting and seeing not being one of my strong points!
Thanks again for your thoughts, nice to know there's a whole world of bad tummies out there, not in a bad way obviously, I'd like us all to be better tomorrow please!
