Imuran for 10 months and no remission.....

is it time to hang it up? Doc says to stay on it, but I don't see the point if I can't reach a solid remission, and the potential side effects

Can't tell by your post if it is working at all or if you just haven't reached a "solid remission". Is it doing anything and what else are you on? If it isn't doing anything at all it is past time to hang it up.

How much do you weigh and how much have you been taking. AFAIK, max. dose is 2.5mg/kg body weight. If you are on dose close to that then it is not working. In addition to that what else you are taking?

Im on Imuran but I have no clue what its doing. Most of my better days are from Remi. If its helping you even a little bit, I would stay on it. Assuming no bad side effects from blood tests.

I agree with what's been said, you should get the levels checked and see if you're metabolizing it correctly and if you're in the correct level to see benefit. Some people respond easily and others do not. I had to take allopurinol with 6mp for a while to get my levels up to where they needed to be to get into remission. Unfortunately these blood tests are not cheap. I also think some GIs will keep your on imuran in case you start Remicade. It is believed that you are less likely to build up antibodies to remicade if you're on imuran while using it. Talk to your GI.

I am glad you posted this. I have been on Imuran for 6 months. It has helped, but I am not in full remission yet. My doc is upping my dose carefully. I take 150 one day and 175 the next. I have my blood checked every 2 weeks. So far, liver is fine. Anemia is getting better. He's talking remicade now, but he agrees that we may not be at the right dose for Imuran yet. I have seen on this forum that some have better luck with 6mp. I may suggest that. From what I can see people often add remicade to the Imuran, but I wonder if that is mandatory. If I add remicade, I'd like to discontinue the Imuran. I'd rather only have 1 dangerous drug in my system. What are your thoughts about that?
Are you getting any better? I find that when I am consistent with the rectal meds, I do much better. The blood goes away. I still have urgency upon waking, but it's all good in about 1-2 hours. The rest of the day is fine. Maybe that's as good as it will get. I am wrestling with that issue. I hope you feel better soon. Again,thanks for posting this.
