Mom's Severe Stomach Pains

My mother had been battling UC for many, many years. Two days ago, she started experiencing severe stomach cramps, probably the worst she's ever had. I took her to the ER and they gave her an IV and prescribed some painkillers. She's still having horrendous cramps and spasms and feels like she's going to die. She may go back to the ER tomorrow but I feel so helpless and don't know what I can do to help her through this. I've read that this disease is one that there is no cure for and people just have to learn to live with it and deal with it the best they can. Like I said, she's had flare ups before but it seems like this time it's the worst it's ever been. They gave her a CT scan as well and found cysts on her kidneys. Could that be a contributing factor? Thanks for any help or advise.

The docs put her on cipro, Tylenol, and something else (can't remember). I don't know all the facts but she has had blood in her stool before (bright red). She went back to the ER today and I'm currently waiting to hear back. She may go see her primary physician tomorrow but my mom doesn't think he'll really be able to do much.

The painful cramping probably won't go away until she gets on meds. Definitely have her see a gastro because her primary care doctor will tell her he can't treat her and to see a gastro anyway.

I agree that she should see a gastroenterologist for the UC.

I was put on Cipro years ago and it caused a lot of discomfort.
Would never take it again.

Did the ER doc suggest a specialist because of the cysts on her kidneys? Sounds like something that should be investigated.
