Has fecal matter really been declared a drug?

I've seen several mentions over the past several weeks about this. The mentions are links sites like naturalnews.com or something like that (I made that name up) One last night was a link from Tropical Traditions (coconut oil mfg) on their Facebook page. The article stated what I've been hearing: fecal matter has been declared a drug or controlled substance or whatever by the FDA. It is now in Phase I trials and cannot be used outside of those trials unless it is a verifiable life threatening situation and forms have been filled out, reviewed and approval granted by, I assume the FDA or a subsidiary.

If this is true it's just...freaking crazy.

Yep...its true! Just leave it to the FDA to put their noses where it doesn't belong. Fecal transplants have been done since the 1950's and with great success. I think the success rate for C-Diff infections are right around 90%. Coincidentally, there is also a Pharmaceutical company that is trying to duplicate the bacteria found in human stool and put it in a pill...hmmm perfect timing.

Yeah, do you believe it? It is classified as a biologic!! BTW, the poop pill they are creating is called Repoopulate...lol!

haha...that is too funny! Well, we are having FT done next month, by a doctor. Yes, we are going "underground" to have this prohibited treatment done! I feel like such a criminal now! lol

I'm going to say again that I support this. Do you realize how many asymptomatic strep or other carriers there are? Ever heard of typhoid Mary? Fecal transplants from "healthy" donors that haven't been rigorously screened are a recipe for diaster. I understand people get desperate.. But the pathogens that people have no idea they have can have huge implications for people who already have immune system issues.

Nothing is going to stop you from DIY at home. The FDA isn't going to come after you.

Obviously. But I can't do the same checks or get the same expertise as if it is done by a doctor. I also wouldn't get the material up as far as if it was administered by colonoscopy. I would just get it in the rectum, up to the sogmoid if I'm lucky.

But that's beside the point anyway. If part of their reasoning is, as Pathogen said, to make sure there are qualified donors, this will just push desperate people to do them at home causing more problems. Back alley fecal transplants, if you will.

Well...it's not so 'obvious' actually. If killcolitis, say, lived in the US and let her GI know she did a 'DIY' FMT on her daughter, it wouldn't be hard to envision a scenario where she, as a parent, faced some type of repercussions for it.

So, if poop is considered a drug, then what do I say when traveling when customs/security asks if I have any drugs concealed on my person? Is it safe to say I don't have any drugs if I already took a big dump that day?

First of all, I support the idea of properly screening the donors. I don't support the FDA saying this a new drug and they need to approve or deny the doctors that are performing FT's. I don't agree that all FT's had to come to a screeching halt until the necessary approval was granted. The majority of FT's that are being done in this country are by MD's at well respected hospitals and Universities and these doctors already screen their donors. So, why the need to all of a sudden put a halt to FT's??? Check out Dr. Lawrence Brandt, (New York) Dr. Rubin, (University of Chicago) Dr. Johnson (Eastern Va Medical School), and there are many others that have been safely performing Fecal Transplants for years now.

Has their been a sudden outbreak of Typhoid Mary? I think not...But, there has been a growing interest in FT's by Big Pharma and trying to duplicate the bacteria that's in our stool. I think its all a bit too coincidental and convenient...just my two cents

Yeah they are coming after you. The walls have ears, FDA is watching in the dark. Snowden said that, well it was about the NSA but what's the difference.

They will say: Are you trying to get better. without giving us money!??!?!
