Why do I feel better reducing the enema's to every second/third night?

Generic rowasa enemas made me bleed/were ineffective. Try brand name sulfite-free Rowasa/Ask your doctor for them. Generics suck! Brands FTW!

It's possible that YOU are sensitive to 5-ASA (specifically mesalamine), although it's a very low dosage, which could continue the inflammation. If your UC is limited, a fecal calprotectin showing mild inflammation doesn't say exactly where the inflammation is, does it?

Since you have UC, you could still have inflammation regardless of taking the Pentasa or not. You might be sensitive to the metabisulphite in the enema.

The only way you'd know is to go off the med, try another without the metabisulphite, try a steroid sup or steroid enema and see how you do.

My thought is that possibly the extra weight in the sigmoid from the enema could cause the discomfort and still encourage a bm. You were obviously improving from being on the meds, so the inflammation (unless visibly seen) isn't yet proven that it's from the meds.

All you can do is ask your doctor for another med such as a steroid. I don't think there are other 5ASA enemas in low dosage without a metabisulphite as preservative. OR....stay at the every third night and do the fecal calprotectin test on the day you're going to do the enema. That way, all of the medication will be out of your sigmoid/rectum.

Could that work.
