Actually, Lialda, Asacol, Asacol HD are all released based on the PH of your intestine (it is not a time-release as you suggest). Each of those medications uses a different coating, so there is most definitely a difference in the initial PH that it starts releasing medication, the rate in which medication is released, and so forth.
At the time of my initial diagnosis with uc, I was put on asacol HD, and I switched to Lialda about
4 months later for the convenience of taking my pills just once a day. My system was a little unhappy for about
a week when I switched between them, but things settled down.
