is it possible for a flare up while on prednisolone

HI all,
Im 16 on prednisolone and asacol for UC and the doctor said 1 week ago that my UC is getting better but over the last week I feel it has progressively gotten worse.is it possible to flare up while on prednisolone? Also if I am flaring up again what might they do? cry

Well, if things are getting worse since you last spoke with your doctor, then the first thing you need to do is contact your doctor and let him/her know this. Yes, I would imagine you could flareup while on Pred, especially, if you are on a very low dose of it but pred can also take a couple weeks to work on some people. How much pred are you on?

I would imagine your GI could give you a stronger dose of oral pred. If you are already on the max oral dose of pred, then the next step would be intravenous steroids given in a hospital. Steroids can also be given as an enema and that has helped some as well.

Are you tapering down on your Pred? If so you definately can flare at lower doses. You might have to go up to a higer dose again to get it under control. Talk to your Doc.

Yes, it is possible to have a flare up that prednisone will not control. I've seen a lot of people experience that. Hopefully your condition will respond if you give it some more time. I had a situation where I had a relapse of my UC when I tapered down to a lose dose a pred. In my case, it wasn't that I didn't respond, it was that the medication I was using to control the UC flare up wasn't working.

Hello... this is my first post but I can answer this. The answer is simply yes and I know so because I just went through this. A few months ago I started into a flare and was put on 40mg of pred. I bounced back fairly quickly and then began the process of tapering off the pred. I got to 20mg a day and my symptons came back TWICE as bad from where I was in the original flare. So bad in fact, I had to be admitted to the hospital to treat my symptoms/pain. After a few days there I went back to 40mg but with only mild gains. My doctor moved me up to 50mg and I got immediate benefit from the extra 10mgs. There are many arguments that say the benefit over 40mg is very little but for me it worked.

I am back down to 40mgs now and hope to continue to taper down. I do need to find a new maintenance drug now though... Asacol had been working but has been discontinued.
