**This may be graphic so stop reading now if you aren't interested!**
I've always wondered about
something. I have a more proctitis-form of UC, only affecting maybe 8 inches of my lower colon. When I'm flaring, like now I've never understood how when I start going first thing in the morning (blood, water, more blood, diarreah, blood...you know the drill) it suddenly stops when the upper part of my colon starts going somewhat normal but soft stools.
In other words, how can something come out through an area that is bloody, bleeding, etc. and have no blood? I mean, its passing through the same area!! Does the blood just "shut off" after a while?
I've never understood this.
Thanks,
John

My theory: Well, your first poop of the day has been sitting for quite a while in the inflamed area of your colon before you pass it. During that time, it has collected blood, mucus and whatever else through direct contact with the inflamed area of your rectum walls. Subsequent poops still pass through that area, but don't hangout long enough to have time to collect all of the blood that the first one did. You are still bleeding so your subsequent poops have some blood in them, it just might not be enough to be visible to the naked eye.

That can be hard to pinpoint but it's very possible the blood you are seeing first thing is maybe from bleeding ulcers in the inflamed area and once they're done shedding is why you don't see any blood later when you start to get more formed stools..it might even be bleeding internal hemorrhoids. Ah IBD is so complex....frustrating I know.

I think it's occult blood.

Freaky! I knew it had something to do with a witches coven! (just kidding).
It's funny because I'm on vacation in a cabin alone. My family left a day ago and I'll be here for a few days alone. Just me, my colitis, and my dog. If you look at another post of mine I had some kind of bacteria also for a little bit.
I'm a little spooked in this place. I've been playing haunted house-type computer games, there is thunder outside, and it's rather dark. I usually don't believe in ghosts, haunts...but this place is a little creepy. Your comment had great timing!!

I'd say it's real-world blood...not occult (as in not visible in stool).
It's pooled blood. Good sign, however, meaning things are improving somewhat.
please ask for rectal meds when you get back to civilisation.

Oh you don't say it like that? I took it over from German 1:1 I guess that doesn't work haha I just meant the blood will most likely still be there but you don't see it.
John, are you sure it's really just proctitis and not already up? I don't wish that on you don't get me wrong.
I agree with quincy about
the enemas. As long it is proctitis it can be well treated with enemas.

Andrina, well my 22,475 colonoscopies have always shown just the very lower/left side of my colon, but it probably cheats sometimes.
By the way, no ghost visits last night!

I agree with iPoop. I experience the same thing. Also, because I take a suppository every night, the first morning BM is not pretty. I usually don't have blood anymore, in fact, if I forget to take my suppository, I usually do have it. Also, it could be a a hemmie. I chuckled at your "graphic" warning. This forum is the ONLY place where we can be graphic. I find it comforting to be able to share all of the lovely details of this condition. Thanks for posting the question, as the issue has boggled me too. :)

You bleed.. you stop. Some has it some doesn't. you're not continuously bleeding unless in a super crazy flare. And even then not always.
