Imodium during flare.

How many of you are taking Imodium during a flare? Has it helped? Can it be taken long regularly? If I firms things up a bit, wouldn't that allow the rectal and maintenance medicine to stay where it should be for longer and allow the colon to heal? How many are you taking to keep things under control?

My Gi would only allow me one a day but I can't take them. They don't agree with me...it causes extremes cramping in me.

They help me a lot, especially if I need to go somewhere where the bathroom situation might not great. I also use hyocsyamine as an anti-spasmadic which helps as well. My GI didn't want me to take more than 1/day either and didn't want it to be an everyday thing.

That is odd how how some doctors say only one a day and my doc is recommending up to 6 a day. I wouldn't take that much, but that's a huge difference in doses. Did it help with your urgency, or did it just cause you to save it all up for later and then explode urgently.

No, it definitely helped with the urgency. And personally I don't mind going when i have something to go, so even if it just held it back for one big blow later, I would be happier. I can't stand going 10 times/day and just letting out a little mucous/blood each trip.

I have been in a constant flare since being diagnosed three years ago. However, my flare the last few years has been different than at diagnosis time. At diagnosis I was having about 3 bloody diarrhea BM's per day and now I am having 8-12 trips to the bathroom per day but I have no blood and have formed stools almost all the time. At the time of diagnosis, when I was having bloody diarrhea, I tried Immodium. It formed up my stools but put me in a state of constant constipation, which to me was worse than just having to go a few times and be done with it. Since my stools have been pretty much formed for quite some time now I am afraid to take Immodium for fear of toxicmegacolon.

I guess my main concern is the urgency and not being able to get out of the house. I am hoping that Imodium will give me the confidence I need to go out. Having to constantly worry about the BR and sometimes not making it, really sucks. I tried psyllium seed powder yesterday and it really messed me up; in BR all day with terrible urgency and blood. I'm hoping there won't be such terrible urgency with Imodium and that it will give me more than 10 or 20 seconds to find a BR.
