Various forms of folic acid, which one to use?

It would depend on some things.. were you taking supplements, when did you last take them before the test? do you know your homocysteine level, or methylmalonic acid level? Plasma folate and b12 are inaccurate, red blood cell levels are a better test of over methylation. You can have high folic acid levels because your body is unable to process the supplement form, which would also increase your b12 levels. How much folic acid and b12 were you taking? Was this just in the shots? I'd stop doing shots and retest in a few months. If your levels remain high, it's a functional problem where the folic and b12 don't have what they need to get into your cells and you'll need to first try the bioavailable forms and then, cofactors.
Iron, b12 and folate all work together. Having a low iron with high levels of the other two would really make me wonder about functional deficiency. Maybe stop supplementing for a couple of months with supplementing lactoferrin to raise your iron and then retest.

You can order the other tests through direct labs.com but will pay more then if you had a provider who has an account to order through. Homocysteine and plasma ammonia are standard tests that labcorp processes. Again, I wouldn't run the oat, uat or spectra unless you weren't seeing good results from supplementing for 23 and me based on homocysteine and ammonia. That flies in the face of dr Amy, et al. But that testing is expensive and highly subjective.. And it's best to have an "expert" interpret it.

. Some medical providers have accounts with test labs so their patients get a bit of a discount Many insurances will not pay for these tests. Direct labs.com allows you to order the test but at a higher price then direct pays affiliated with a provider that has an account.

However, homocysteine levels and ammonia serum levels are something you should be able to get any doctor to order through labcorp and they should be covered by your insurance.

I would not pursue specialized testing (oat= organic acids test, uat=urine amino acids or spectracell=red blood cell levels of various things like vitamin stores) unless you had gotten 23and me and a homocysteine and ammonia test, then interpreted all of those results together and supplemented for them. If after a few months you weren't making headway then, you might want to consider uat,oat,spectracell.. Many "methylation experts" run those tests before and several times during treatment.. This results in atleast 1000 in out of pocket testing in the first 6mths -1 year. You also really need a good dr to help you interpret the results.. Or a lot of time researching.

My last b-12 injection was 2 1/2 weeks prior to the test and I know I had not supplemented with 1mg of folic acid at least a week prior. However, I do eat rice chex everyday and I noticed it has 50 percent of folic acid and 25 percent of b12. I have not had the other tests done but will certainly look into them. I go to the doctor this Thursday and will ask about them.

I will no longer get the b-12 injections or supplement with folate. I will look into the iron and retest. How long should I wait to retest? As you mentioned I will try my best to not eat foods that are supplemented. What do you mean by bioavailable forms then cofactors? I'm guessing bioavailable is the methyl types, but what are cofactors?
