A couple issues with what your doctor said:
1) Most of the cultures in yogurt do not survive the acidity of the stomach in the same way that the pills do. I'm afraid the best way to maximize the bacteria is to take a high strain one in pill form.
2) Low-fat yogurt? I'm curious, why? When fat is taken out of the yogurt, they load it up with carbohydrates. Is your doc not educated in nutrition? Assuming the yogurt is made from the milk of grassfed animals you will get CLA and all the good benefits from the plain one.
3) Goat milks yogurt is easier to digest for some people. I'd recommend the redwood hill farms brand - the full fat one. They also make wonderful kefir.
