First UC, now Gastritis?

Soooo it appears that my symptoms are different and I called my GI.  I have upper abdominal discomfort and get a "gnawing" feeling in my upper gut...especially in the middle of the night.  GI thinks Gastritis.  So first UC, now gastritis?

Who has experience w/ this condition.  I feel like a newbie now...I have done so much research on UC, but this is new.  Who can tell me what helps (natural and meds).  Any insight....does it go away quickly?  Is it chronic?  This blows....just wanna feel well. Ugh!

For gastritis, it should be determined if you have infection or just inflammation.

You might also have reflux, which can give you that feeling as well....do you mean just under your sternum or around your belly button?

I'd initially suggest you try Zantac to see if that helps...start with twice a day. I used it a half hour before eating breakfast and then around 10ish at night.

Are you flaring as well?

You could also try a probiotic that isn't in capsule form...that could help if you do have an infection.

I can relate to the crap that keeps on giving...this summer has been hell.

Hi Q,

Yeah, Dr. didn't say to come in...he recc. Prilosec 20mg morn/night. I haven't started that yet...based on some reasearch here...i started taking DGL and also some Pepto. Trying to eat soft foods. Scared w/ the Prilosec that I will have a re-bound once I stop taking it...but I may have to bite the bullet.

Gnawing is above belly button, and under sturnum (more under sturnum). I never had this before. I am not really flaring (my usual mild scene) In fact, my UC has been a little calmer w/ this new thing...go and figure that out. I have been trying to take my Rowasa earlier in the day if I can to let it stay in longer..and maybe that is helping.

I take VSL 3 in powder...so hopefully that will help. Zantac sounds interesting.

So sorry about your summer...sometimes it seems that all this crap comes at once. Just once I would like a period of calm. Yeah, at least summer is winding down...hoping for a good fall.

What's dgl?

Take Zantac instead of Prilosec to start. Zantac is a first-line med for reducing acid, it's not a PPI such as Prilosec.

Yeah, summer sucks, I'm shocked I haven't flared as of yet considering my mental state..lol.  I'm putting many eggs into the Fall basket.  At least to regain my footing for the rest of the year...as if..

Hey Q,

Thanks, yeah no more pepto for me. I just went to Target (to pick up some groceries) and also spoke to pharmacist about this. She agreed that Prilosec would not be a good first choice here. She liked Pepsid Complete. I wonder if that is like Zantac as it also lists as an acid reducer/antacid/gas reducer.

DGL was recc. on Dr. Weil's website and also alot recc. on the Heartburn/Gerd board here on Healingwell. It is alternative but seems to be good for alot of people. Just like my UC, I like to mix reg. meds and some alternative just to cover my bases.

So glad you're not flaring w/ all of the annoyances/aggravation this summer. Be on the lookout though for the calm after the storm though. You know how that crazy UC can be. Look who I am telling? You are better than a Doctor!!!

I'd just do the Zantac...no other ingredients such as calcium/magnesium/artificial sweeteners...

Ah, liquorice...again, I'd pass on it, not suggesting you do, of course. It can increase estrogen...so if your UC worsens during periods, maybe nix it.

Zantac I don't think is considered a gas reducer...I've never taken one except on the odd occasion a Tums...ugh. I prefer to use baking soda in water if the acid in my stomach is a bit much than normal. But I have on occasion increased the Zantac and it definitely helps.

Again..trial and error.

Oh, I'm starting to get an external hemmie now...

The calm after the storm is always my nemesis...but my mind is always in chaos, so that might be a good thing? no, not really...it's not a good chaos..
The weather is sauna level...hate it. My commitments are as few or as much as I make them...can't wait for Sept..yeeha! I'll have a good break, unless something else hits the fan.

Ugh, I hate that hot sauna weather. I think it contributes to a flare for me. I have a constantly over thinking mind and I have been working hard to learn to chill. Sure isn't easy when you are built a certain way. I'll be thinking good autumn thoughts for you! A hemmie to boot...gotta love it.

Thanks for the good advice... all good stuff to try and your price is right! Just a funny thought...whenever I have a medical problem...my mom asks me ..what does Quincy say..lol. Your like a celebrity!

As much as I hate them, today I used the proctocedyl supps...I have to remember now to NOT fart at all...

Chill, eh? I guess you don't mean in the AC...
I'm chilling in a different way by not doing anything more than my obvious commitments. I call it hibernating, but I recently saw the word cocooning...hmm, wonder that I'll become in Sept?

My doc gave me prilosec for my gastritis. It helped immensely.
