Really interesting info on gut bug changes. Also mentions the IBD study have to try and look into that.

I think they are going to find out that our gut bugs control just about everything.

May tie together with my thread on dysbiosis,lowered bacteriodes when quitting, also carbon monoxide
I think I remember modulates iNOS.
That is how my UC started quit in 1977 UC 1980,started smoking 1982 remission,quit again
1986 flare same one I am in now. Except smoking does not control anymore.

My experience with weight gain (i.e., one-person study) led me to believe that my weight gain was due to:

1. Metabolism slowing because it was no longer propped up by nicotine;
2. Cigarettes are a great meal substitute when you're dieting;
3. Food tasted SO MUCH BETTER; and
4. I never knew when a meal was over because I always punctuated the end of a meal with a cigarette.

#s 2, 3 and 4 caused me to eat a lot more, #1 caused me to pack it on rather than burn it off.

Nicotine is also an appetite suppressant, that's the main reason (I've learned) that quitting smoking often leads to weight gain.

Yet the study is saying that actually the weight gain is not explained by increased calorie intake and it points to the bacteria.

Great news about the study, I remember the days when I was told by medics that it was silly speculation by patients that quitting smoking was a factor, yet now it is accepted by medics that quitting smoking does seem to be factor, even though they haven't been able to say why. I know there have been so many non-productive studies into nicotine and the metals - would really make sense if the bacteria are the key, opening up a window of vulnerability for UC to take hold.

Still thinking that the key to the big bucks going into bacteria research will be the promise of weight loss and hopefully us UCers will benefit from the knowledge gained.
