Has anyone here with UC also had blood clots in the legs?
This is my second bout of clots resulting from a flare, I'm trying to figure out if its pred-related or something else.
Please help!

Nope, not me as of yet. Could be related, could be your genetic make-up, could be med-related, etc.  But, they definitely can be hormone-related, so pred could be the culprit.

Where's your clot exactly?

Are you a smoker?

Don't think that is pred related. I know a lot of sitting can cause clots and I find myself sitting more with this disease than being active. I don't remember what else you are on but I have never heard that as being one of the billion side effects of prednisone.

Being hospitalized is a risk factor for DVT. Of course, the longer the stay, the more at risk you are. Were you given blood thinners at the hospital? YOu can google DVT in hospitalized patients, its a common problem as far as hospital complications go.

This doesn't seem to be much known about, but high platelet count can be associated with IBD. High platelets = increased likelihood of blood clots.

High platelets was something I had, but never got a blood clot while staying in hospital. I had blood thinner injections in the stomach every day, though, and sometimes I had to wear those godawful stockings too. Also, I would get so bored and hungry sometimes, I'd wander off around the hospital quite a bit and forage for food.

Anyway, I do suspect the underlying cause is your UC! Speak to your doctor about it; best of luck.

People with UC have an increased risk of DVT. I thought about aguywithuc when I saw this post. Remember he had a clot. I can't think of anyone else who posts here that it's happened to. Are you doing any better beatUC?

Mthfr genetics as well as factor v, antiphospholypid syndrome, etc all clot causes and should be screened for.

never was a smoker, very active when not flaring, DVTs just don't make sense in my case.
C Diff, DVTs and still in a raging flare, I'm glad to still be alive, but not really.
This has been the worse year I've ever had.

Might as well not have posted... It's UC inflammation which leads to increased platelets in the blood which leads to blood clots.

Can't make it any clearer than that.

Pulled my platelet county yesterday - 443

I always watch because each clot was related to prednisone and platelet count over 700. Canary in the cole mine.

Normal people have a platelet count of approximately anywhere between 150 and 450 so 443 is definetly on the high side and 700 is definetly too high.

I have been told, as Nicecupoftea says, that the inflammatory process puts us at risk of dvt. I have had two bouts of unexplained pain recently, one in calf, one in chest, both put hospital on alert for potential dvt (luckily it wasn't) and they also took a blood test of a level called d-dimer which is standard protocol in the UK for assessing blood clot risk. Mine was slightly raised but then the medics said, with UC, it often is, so not really helpful in assessing actual, immediate risk
