Well I saw my GI yesterday and it was all good news. Remicade seems to have done the trick to get me back on track to a healthy remission.

Just 4-5 months ago I was dealing with a flare that ended with me being hospitalized for 3 weeks. Several GI' s in hospital were very certain surgery was in my cards at that time. Luckily my regular GI, was willing to fight for a bit to save my colon and was willing to be patient while Remicade was introduced into my system.

Today, I'm symptom free. My CT scan done this summer came back ruling out Crohns (new GI was suspicious of previous reports in my file) YAY! and showing just a bit of inflammation left in the left side descending colon.

My blood work (other than my iron) is all back into normal ranges (it was all over the place when in hospital).

I am now to continue with my Remicade infusions every 8 weeks and check-in with my GI in 6 months!

Just thought I'd update for those who followed and helped with support during my ordeal, and to offer a good news - hopeful story for those who are in a not so great spot with their Colitis at the moment.

Wow! That is amazing to hear!

We share a similar story.. I was very, VERY reluctant to try Remicade. But once I did, it became a lifesaver. No more 1-2 week hospital visits for anemia and other symptoms, no more agonizing pain, no more out of this world blood reports.. you get the gist!

Quincy - the CT scan is used to see inflammation and or scar tissue in the small bowel which would indicate crohn's. Since my original scope for diagnosis indicated patchy-ness, he (new GI) felt it should have been investigated further to rule out crohn's ... now we have!

Well, it makes no sense via CT scan that since you don't have any inflammation/thickening  in your small intestine a conclusion has been made that you DON'T HAVE Crohn's.

One can have CD in the colon and not anywhere else...so to me, your patchiness pattern of inflammation in your colon is more likely CD than UC.  A CT scan of your small intestine doesn't rule that out.

After 7 years with this disease, multiple flex/sigmoids, several colonoscopies (by 4 different GI's), many biopsies, lots of blood work, a barium enema and a ct scan ALL pointing to UC... I think it is safe to say MY diagnosis was and is UC! Despite the first report ever done indicating some patchy-ness, which granted is not typical of colitis, but is well documented to be possible in some cases.

This new Doc. who is a very reputable and a leading GI in the great Ottawa region was being thorough (which my original GI was not.. ) so, I'll appreciate that the scan showed no reason to suspect Crohn's and I'll take his word for it. :)

This is great news and I am glad to hear it! Perhaps I tapered to quickly off the Pred, but I was back at the GI on Thursday who put me back up to 40mg. I lost another 10 pounds since my visit 2 weeks before. I go for my 2nd remi infusion on Tuesday and am hoping that it will start to take hold soon. Nice to hear a success story! I needed this.

That's great news! Congratulations!

I'm still trying the remicade, I'm in between my second and third infusion. After the second one I've started to have some relief, hopefully it continues.
