Lialda problem - pills NOT dissolving

Lately I have been finding them in the toilet, whole. You can even read the numbers on them.

I just got diagnosed in July, so haven't been on Lialda for too long. I am supposed to be taking them 3x/day. I know they're timed release, but they are not releasing anything. I can understand it happening a time or two, but this has been 5-6 times this week that I've seen. Who knows how many I might have missed?

This might explain why I seem to be right on the cusp of remission but can't quite seem to get there. I will be calling the doctor 1st thing Monday.

Has anyone else encountered this and if so, what was your solution?

When I was taking Asacol, I would see the pills in my poo all the time. I have not seen that with the Lialda personally for whatever reason. There have been quite a few strings here about this very issue though, put it in the search.

I would try Pentasa or Cazacol.

I have had this happen and when I called my dr he suggested I take 1 Imodium a day for a few days to slow things down. You may still want to try something else, it could be your body can't break down the outer coating. Good luck!

This is like a rock and a hard place type thing. I don't know if this is true with everyone who experiences this problem but for your case and my case I wonder if this is actually kind of a good sign, not a bad one. I too have recently seen more Asacol's in my stool than normal (just started Lialda today) and I wonder if this is happening because we are doing better and if you are doing better, then maybe we shouldn't rock the boat. I was finding my Asacols in hard formed stool. They get incased in the stool and make their way through our system without reaching the correct PH level. Obviously they aren't doing a darned thing if they don't get released and yet at the same time they are the reason we got hard formed stool in the first place. I would worry more if you are seeing this happen while having diarrhea. I don't really know what to tell you but if you are doing better, you are doing better and perhaps that is the reason they are coming through unused.

What are the symptoms you're having otherwise...how many bms, consistency, etc?

How are you eating?

Are you on any probiotics and/or fibre supplements?

Are you taking them with food or empty stomach?

GaryLouisville -- why did you start Lialda if your Asacol seems to be working?  Are they the same med??

The Asacol worked to get rid of blood and diarrhea but I am going 8-15 times per day. There was a spell here not too long ago of several people who claimed that they switched from Asacol to Lialda and got much better so I thought I would give it a try. Both have the same med in them (mesalamine) but have different delivery systems. Also, with Asacol you take some pills several times per day and with Lialda you usually take all pills at once, one time per day. I wonder if having a larger amount of medicine once per day is better than having a smaller amount of medicine several times per day. We shall see.

Kinda gross, but make sure its not just the undissolved pill coating you are seeing come through. The pills are made so that the coating will not start to dissolve or open up until it hits your colon, so the medicine can work there. So it could be the medicine got out like it is supposed to, but the coating didnt dissolve much.
