Question - Prednisone effects on Manual Dexterity?

Back on Pred again at 40mg/daily.

This time around I seem to have some issues with manual dexterity I guess it's called. Like minor issues typing on the computer, or trouble with work when I try and do fine tasks with my hands like make small electrical connections. It's like my mind knows what I want to do - but my body does not get it quite right and I miss the odd key a little when typing, or my fingers don't twist the fine wire all that perfectly.. Hard to explain really. Its an odd feeling.

Anyway does anyone else on Pred experience something like this - like maybe when making arts and crafts and difficulty in doing this?

Before I get myself to freaked out and call the GI I thought I's ask on here.

I can't remember if I had this last time on Pred or not. I know i had muscle cramping a lot but I can;t recall a loss in dexterity.

Im sorry you are on this drug, it has lots of side effects and i experienced many of them. I remember being on it i felt weak in the arms but not what you described. Maybe try taking magnesium malate and calcium?

I vaguely remember somebody here once saying they had issues with pred and that sort of thing, and the suggestion was something about needing more potassium in your system. So eat some bananas; see if that helps.

@ipoop and conquor Thanks! You know now that you mention it someone else said that as well and I forgot all about it - it was for a different condition or disease but similar symptoms.

They said their doctor told them to add salt and potassium food sources to their diet. It has something to do with muscle contraction. I wonder if Pred effects these nutrients or uptake of them or something weird like that. I don't eat a lot of either. I'll try magnesium as well.

Potassium foods (not supplements) are a definite yes however, I personally recommend eating as little salt as possible while on pred.

Salt and pred had something to do with increased risk for bloating, I think

I stopped - but I think I'll go back and try and finish off at some point soon... long story. Ultimately I ended in a flare - but there were some serious positive benefits as well. I needed to get this flare under control and I wanted to know if the AA treatment was effecting the Pred and Immuran - i.e making them not work for me for some reason. Which appears to be the case, as by the second day of stopping the AA treatment I was like 60% better.

But this also suggests it really does effect... Although in a negative way, but I was told right from the start that sometimes things get worse before they get better and eventually click... makes me wonder, especially now if there is something to it.

We talked about doing both traditional meds and this to together... which is what I might try. Someone has to try and get through this... everyone else had to stop because they couldn't take the negative effects... so no one actually completed the protocol...

I'll make a new Amino Acid therapy post to summarize everything tonight.

It really puts people in a tough position when it comes to some of these things. I tried a couple of different things which made me worse and I just couldn't tell if it was a temporary die off reaction or if I was just really getting worse. Sometimes you just want to plow ahead and see if you can get over the hump but then if you guess wrong you will continually get worse, which is not a good thing for UC'rs.
