I have UC but I think proctitis is more accurate as I heard the dr say its only at 6cm. Last year when I flared I had 40mg Pred/day for 2 wks before 5mg/wk taper down as well as 3g/day sulfasalazine and the blood with BM disappeared for a while.
When it flared again went back on the Pred but this time 4wks at 40mg before the 5mg/wk taper down as well as salofalk enemas every night for 2wks then every 2nd night..... But alas no response.
I am pretty lucky in that my only side effects are blood, urgency, 2-3BM/day, and a twisted gut feeling (which might be IBS).
My dr then prescribed 4.8g mesavant (oral slow release mesalazine)and a predsol supp in morning and a pentasa supp at night. Horaaay! No blood for 2wks now 1st time in more than 1year! Apparently enemas go past my inflamed area so supps are the way to go.
I just don't know how long too take the meds for? I'm guessing as I am a high risk relapser that ill have to maintain the oral mesavant and pentasa supps for a yr or so but should cut out the Predsol soon?
Also-I think these drugs have triggered IBS more then ever -gas, stomach pains, twisted gut feeling, bloating, diarrhoea, urgency....but no blood! :) Any IBS remedies?
