Anyone tried antibiotics?

Hello everyone. I am a new member and I was wondering if anyone has had any success with antibiotics? I have been diagnosed with Pan Colitis for about 10 years ( I have had symptoms since I was a child). The only times that I can remember ever going into remission is when I took antibiotics. The effects of the antibiotics made me feel 100 percent better, even though it only lasted for a short period of time. I have tried many diets and many different types of meds and the antibiotics are the only thing that actually worked. Has anyone ever had the same effects of antibiotics and if so, which antibiotics did you take? I just feel that there is some type of antibiotic that can help people with UC.

i've taken antibiotics a lot this year- flagyl twice, vancomycin twice, and penicillin once. i don't really know if it had any effect on my UC or not. i was flaring during all the times i had to take them and felt the same when the course was done.

I was in a bad flare up that would not subside and after taking a course of antibiotics, it finally went into remission. I also started an immune suppressant at the same time which may be 100% the reason behind my bounce back but I do not know. I definitely notice that antibiotics have various impacts on different people. A lot of people with Crohn's take Flagyl regularly to help maintain remission. With UC, it is usually noted that antibiotics cause symptoms to worsen but this is not always the case. We had a few members who did triple antibiotic therapy got gained long remissions. It's all very individual. What antibiotics did you take?

Flagyl and Cipro improved my symptoms significantly, but not enough to avoid surgery.

I am the same as you. The only thing that really works is antibiotics.

The problem is that you have to keep on them. The doctors don't like to keep people on antibiotics permanently.

My feeling is that there could be an antibiotic "protocol" that could work for some people. Thinks like H. Pylori and Whipple's disease require multiple antibiotics taken for months or even years to get rid of the infection permanently.

For UC they occassionally give a 1 or 2 week course of 1 antibiotic.. and ofcourse it doesn't work permanently.

My suspicion is that antibiotics only work for a percentage... 15 to 30 percent. But for those people there could be a protocol that would help them greatly. Something like that is being investigated for Crohn's (triple antibiotics).

Some protocol that is a combination of anti and pro-biotics. But it's complicated and hard to figure out the right protocol. A single antibiotic for a couple of weeks is likely not the answer.
