Sulphasalazine vs mezavant/lialda

Has anyne noticed a difference between how their ulcerative colitis responds to these meds? Just wondering if it's worth switching from mezavant back to sulphasalazine. I was on sulphasalazine first but only for about a month because I was pregnant and the doc said it lowers folic acid levels. So much was going on that im not sure if there was a difference between the two for me. Has anyone not responded to one but responded to the other?

I would try sulfasalazine if you tolerate it. I have tried Asacol, colazal and Lialda. All of these seemed to be the same for me, no big differences among them. Sulfasalazine is the only one of these that I can say has made a positive difference in my UC. I take the enteric coated ones.

When I first was diagnosed during a terrible flare , I was hospitalized for a week . The specialist put me on Lialda for over a year . I had no drug coverage and was paying about $600 a month out of pocket just for Lialda . I still had many flares . The specialist would not prescribe anything else and suggested removing my colon . I finally fired him and went to our family doctor and suggested we try different drugs I had researched online . The one that worked and I'm still on is Sulfazine EC ( Sulfazine DR is the same, delayed release ) . I was taking 2 - 500 MG pills 4 times a day . Now ,2 years later, I'm down to 2 pills in the am, 1 pill at noon, 2 pills at night . 5 pills a day . Haven't had a flare in 2 years. Cost per month is about $60 . I know this won't work for everyone , but it did for me ! Jim

Well I started sulphasalazine last Thursday and so far it seems to be helping! Jimbo Unc how long before you started seeing good results? I read it takes a few weeks and am surprised I am already seeing results. I wondered if it will be quicker because I am already on a mesalamine? My stepmother got into remission 40 years ago with sulphasalazine (started 12/day) and has been on 2 pills/day since and never had a second flare. I'm hoping t will work for me the same way. Night side of Eden I'm sorry it didn't work for you :( Some things just don't work for everyone. Hope you find something that works soon.

Well I've been on the sulphasalazine for just over a week and am still noticing some improvements. Minimal side effects. How long was it until you got remission jimbo?
