- Food diary: How long do you give a certain food to have the (bad) effect then? I mean do you feel it after hours or will it be something you ate the day before or maybe two days before that initiate the problem? This is to me the mystery/obstacle to monitoring intake and effect - How fast do the body react to whatever is bad?Different foods will have different reaction times based on my extensive research/testing on me
Everyone reacts to different foods but some of the common non-tolerated foods are: wheat (gluten) and dairy, caffeine (of course), fruit and juices, sugar (inflammatory) and especially sugar-free stuff (evil).
Gluten and wheat products are present in many, many pre-packaged foods and sometimes they are not listed in the ingredients. I was told after testing that wheat was not a problem for me but 2 years later when I decided to remove it from my diet my bad symptoms started getting better and it was due to stopping wheat/gluten. The reason I didn't stop gluten sooner was because it did not have an immediate gut reaction with cramps or a noticeable symptom. In fact bread seemed to
stop my BM's but that is because my gut cannot process wheat so like throwing a ball bearing in a gear assembly.
Was that all it took? No, my gut was still very inflamed and non-tolerant of many foods including: all dairy, almost all fruit and fruit juices and did not like a lot of fiber. It took a long time of diet changes and eliminiations before my gut was healed enough to try some "out" foods again. Today dairy is not a problem but I still keep wheat and gluten out and rarely eat fruit (no juices).
Some things, like caffeine, are immediately rejected by my gut and others (like fruit) may take overnight to be rejected in multiple BM's.
You are the only one that can do this food testing. Start by keeping a food journal to keep notes and you will begin to see a pattern. If you see no improvement in 2 months then food may not be a problem for you. It is not easy modifying your diet, especially over the holidays. But Rx meds never helped me so I had no other choice except surgery.
Good luck.
