Since many UCers use Tylenol instead of forbidden NSAIDs, I thought I'd post this, FYI.

Tylenol can be bad news. My father took tylenol sinus daily for a long time and his liver has never fully recovered from it.

They've also lengthened the dosing interval on the extended release products. Extra strength is now 6 instead of
4 hours, and arthritis has gone to 8. A lot of the problem is that Tylenol is in so many combination preparations -
cold remedies, pain relievers, etc. Be sure to check the contents of your meds to prevent overdosing. And it's best
not to drink at all if you're taking Tylenol.

Some of the information is good to know, especially alcohol and Tylenol. I just don't trust it coming from Dr. Mercola.

Not sure I understand this. If he provides sources to the studies that show liver damage, why wouldn't it be legitimate? The same goes for wikipedia and other news outlets.

Type tylenol in google news and you'll see headline after headline detailing the same thing. The liver damage thing has been the subject of lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies.

It's not exactly news that tylenol perpetuates liver damage. I rarely took it for headaches, and will not take it again. There are other agents far more effective in taming headaches.

I think Sibby was trying to say that Dr. Mercola is not God or the last word on anything or the first word on anything. He is, for the most part, a huckster selling products where it is hard to believe anything he says so Sibby posted real sources on the subject because the subject is important enough not to be taken lightly as some would do if Dr. Mercola was the listed source. He's just another one of those thousands of "Doctors" who sell products for a living. The majority of people should have already known about this Tylenol thing. It is not new news and is not a secret.

Yes, his sources are correct, but his methods in selling and not treating is what concerns me about this 'doctor'. A doctor shouldn't be selling anything, they are meant to heal.

And this kind of information isn't new anyways.

I wouldn't trust anything unless legitimate, verifiable sources are provided. It could come from the FDA, CDC or even Jesus Christ himself, but for the sake of my own health, I would need to verify it with independent, no conflict of interest studies.

The article that InSoFla linked provided those sources. How I interpret that information is not Dr.Mercola's job. His job is to get the news out to me. That's how he keeps his site running. It's not free you know.

Joe Mercola, as usual, takes every opportunity to push his website, his own brand of supplements, and his personal protocols (which a few on here seem to worship as gospel). Thankfully, many people see through this type of propaganda web site, but it is misleading to some, and is offensive to others. People linking to this site do a disservice to any portrayal of objective reporting of information.

The link provided to his website is of course fully loaded, and includes this particular gem:
“Walking barefoot; grounding your body to the Earth, is a simple way to reduce chronic inflammation and pain. When you're grounded, there's a transfer of free electrons, which are among the most potent antioxidants currently known, from the Earth into your body. The effect is sufficient to maintain your body at the same negatively charged electrical potential as the Earth.”
No link to any source for that one!

There's a great episode of This American Life that reports very thoroughly on the recent controversy about Tylenol: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/505/use-only-as-directed

The basic takeaway is that acetaminophen is as safe as we think it is *when used exactly according to the directions*. However, it is unusual among over the counter drugs in that you can go from a perfectly safe dose to a dangerous dose VERY quickly. In the segment they say that most people, when asked why they thought it was OK to take a dose of Tylenol that is greater than what is directed, answer "Everyone always says how safe Tylenol is, so I thought it must be OK to take a little more."

the cautions are valid. it is in a lot of products, and the uninformed can get too much.

IMO the excerpts were overly alarming and InSoFla is playing games.

My husband has liver damage and he was a heavy drinker and heavy on the Tylenol too.
