Pentasa causing gas agony? And utter humilation

For those that were following my previous posts on gas pain agony that has been going on for 3 weeks...

Couldn't stand it anymore so I went to a walk in clinic. Doc suggested it was the pentasa causing the gas and indigestion. He suggested a split the dose to 4 pills twice a day with food. Three weeks ago my GI told me to take all 8 pills at once in the morning as studies are showing it's more effective. Perhaps this is the culprit.

He gave me a script for bentyl and tera(something) to get the gas and indigestion under control. My stomach is so distended that it hurt to touch.

Here's my utter humiliation part:

So while I was waiting for the script (both pills out of stock btw) I went to the dollar store....I got the sudden build up of gas which means I need to poop, like NOW. The clerk won't let me use the bathroom!!! I made it outside it was too late:( I got to the car and drove home. It's not like anyone knew but I feel humiliated for myself. I keep thinking what if this happened and I was with a friend, or it was summer and I wasn't so bundled up? The store clerk is responsible for how sad I feel right now (sniff, sniff). If she had just let me use the bathroom I could have avoided feeling this way, doing laundry and wiping down my car seat.

I'm so upset. Someone grant this woman a little compassion and common sense. I'm sure it was obvious that I needed to go given the sweat on my brow.

all 8 pills at once? yikes. I didn't realise that.

I'd feel equally as humiliated about having an accident.

....regarding the store clerk, they have set rules by the store owner to not allow customer use of bathrooms. It's getting more common today.

Are you not on any rectals yet?

Hi quincy....I was thinking about it last night. My GI made the change in my pentasa about 3 weeks ago. I didn't think that was a possible culprit because I've been using it for over a year. I'll try going back to the split dose and see if that makes a difference. I'm down 3lbs in these weeks because I can't tolerate a sip of water without this gas. I hope the pills he has prescribed works and I'm back to health. Both pills come in tomorrow. I can't wait.

To be honest this is the first time a store clerk as refused me the use of the bathroom. I just feel awful and compounds everything. Sigh:(

If you live in the USA, you can check to see if your state has passed: The Restroom Access Act, also known as Ally's Law, which requires retail establishments that have toilet facilities for their employees to allow customers to use the facilities if the customer suffers from an inflammatory bowel disease or other medical condition requiring immediate access to a toilet. As of April 2013, at least 14 U.S. states had passed versions of the law. They include Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin and Washington. If your state has, then there may be fines and repercussions for that store for denying you access to a restroom in your time of need.

Thanks ipoop: I've heard of that law. Perhaps up here in Canada we should adopt that law too, eh? (Sorry to perpetuate the Canadian stereotype! Couldn't resist!)

Write your representative in Canada then. Ally's story reads just like your post, and that spurred the whole thing here state-side.

Maybe having a card like the ones in the links would make a business think you are a lot more serious about having to go now & medical need?

Hmmm, I take two Pentasa three times a day. Wondering if it really helps to take it all at once, or even a split dose. Sure would be easier to remember once or twice a day!

I was on Asacol, and took all six pills a day with no issue, but I feel better on the Pentasa, and not sure if it's because of the medication, or because of the dosage.

I'm going to try and split the dosage as well. Keep us updated on how you are doing.

I have had several accidents like that. They are humiliating. Thank God my husband supports me like he does. He has cleaned up many messes. My sister since she had her gallbladder out has had a lot of accidents too. When I started having them we make jokes out of it with my kids. They now call her Aunt Doodie. If you don't laugh you surly will cry. I love my sister. :)
