HI
My 4 year old had adenoidectomy yesterday and was given morphine. now he has severe stomach pain and vomiting every time he drinks or eats anything. i understand it a common side effect but would love to know how long it can last. hospital staff was useless couldn't provide any info apart from "it's common", its been 15 hours since the op and vomiting is still persistent. any tips how to stop it or should i go back to the hospital?

I call the ENT's office and ask what you should do. It seems they should be able to give him something to stop the vomiting.

Opiates always make me vomit. The last time this happened was after my last scope when I had demerol. I was nauseated for a whole day - acutely nauseated for the first 12 hours, diffusely nauseated for the next 12-24. I took phenergan to get some relief and that helped a lot.

I have a horrible time with after surgery vomiting. If you haven't gotten anything yet, the best thing I've gotten are the rectal suppositories that help stop the vomiting. Nothing orally to take and it gets right into the bloodstream. Good luck, hope your son feels better soon.

that would be phenergan suppositories. I don't know what the pediatric use rules are. It can make you very very sleepy, which is not necessarily a bad thing when you're so nauseated.

My son, at the age of 20, had metal plates and screws removed from his arm due to a corrective surgery several years prior. The doc gave him Norco but he was vomiting from the anesthesia as well as the Norco. So I went up to the pharmacy to ask about
what I could give him. There is a not widely known item behind the pharmacy counter called Cola Syrup. You don't need a prescript
ion and it works wonders! I always keep it in my house now because it helps with my post-Remi nausea. It's safe for adults and children.
I'm glad he is feeling better though. Speedy recovery to him :)

Cola syrup? interesting, Sherry.
delta....how horrible for your son to be vomiting after surgery, it's happened to me once before. What made it worse was the fact that some of the nurses were wearing fragrance...worse ugh.
As sherry mentioned, the anesthesia can also cause nausea.
Hope your son recovers quickly now that the nausea's eased..
Did he have tonsils out as well?

i suspect it was morphine because he had general before without any problems, what makes me mad is when i asked why give him panadol and morphine without real need for it i mean he didn't have much pain after the doctor said i am not a doctor and he knows better.
Quincy he had only adenoids removed thank god so it is much better in terms of pain and discomfort he is back to his usual self jumping of the furniture and demanding my undivided attention.
