First night out of hospital + one question

So last night was a little rough, was the first night home after being in the hospital for 4 days recouping from my first colonoscopy. Went to bed around 12AM (late I know :( ) and waking up at 7:45AM with a total of about 7 trips to the bathroom during the night. Was all diarrhea and very urgent, almost didnt make it a couple times!

Was kinda weird because while I was in the hospital I would only wake up maybe once or twice. I think it could have been the last day at the hospital I couldn't take my Asacol because they ran out, and in the mess of getting discharged I wasn't able to get my prednisone shot that night, and maybe my body was just getting rid of all the nasty hospital food, I was able to take my dose of Asacol before going to bed but thats it.

Strange because since I have been up and moving around and taking my meds I have not had the urge to go to the bathroom once, I ate a very light breakfast 2 egg whites, 1 yoke, handful of steamed spinach/greens with some olive oil and salt and about to eat a light lunch (white rice with some fish and nutritional yeast flakes) Any ideas on what could have caused last nights episoide? Also, before being hospitalized and getting meds, night time always going to the bathroom on average about 5-7 times, is that normal/common?

Also have a question about medicine, I am taking 4 10mg pills of prednisone in the morning after breakfast, is this normal, it seems more sense to take like 2 in the morning and 2 at night?? The doc is the one that wrote the prescription and just wanted yalls thoughts, thanks! =)

Taking pred all in the morning is a good plan - should hopefully minimize the night-time mania that some people get on pred.

Yep, all the prednisone at once. Thats what I got too.
as for increase in symptoms... they weren't able to get you your asacol or pred shot?! Wow... id say that missing those could def have sparked an increase in symptoms.

As for bathroom trips... i get anywhere from 3-5 hrs of sleep before the bathroom beckons. But once I'm up from the first dash to the toilet... I usually am clamoring there another 3-5 times before I finally either give up on sleep or have an accident and have to get up anyways...

Life in a flare is rough. :)

Pred shouldn't be taken after 4 PM or else it will mess up your sleep (even more than it does anyway). If taking 40 mg in the morning works for you you can stick with it. If you find that your symptoms get really bad in late afternoon and at night, you can try taking half your dose with breakfast and half with lunch (as long as lunch is before 4 PM). That helped make my nights a little better.

Yep. It is best to take it all at once in the morning after breakfast.

i hate to even mention it but the other c diff thread got me thinking that you could've picked it up while you were in the hospital. happened to my mom and me this year. i had been in the clear of c diff and then had an april hospital stay. we were both crapping our brains out by the time we got home and i knew what had happened since the hospital was filthy.

i take my prednisone in divided doses just because that's how i always got it in the hospital. so i take my morning dose and then a dinner dose. i can't sleep either way so it doesn't matter when i take it.

I also split my Prednisone between breakfast and a 3:00 pm snack. Otherwise, I would feel like hell after 5:00 pm.

This was especially true on higher amounts like 40 mg.

That makes me think your issues last night were because of the missed Pred.

I see that you were recently diagnosed, you may want to find a better hospital that specializes in IBDs (UC). They are usually University Hospitals in Cities, you will find the best care there for IBDs and they won't run out of Asacol.

IBDs can be difficult to treat if the hospitals and doctors aren't familiar with treating IBDs. When I first got diagnosed with UC I ended up at a local hospital and suffered; I got so sick while I was in the local hospital that they ended up transferring me to a University hospital with an IBD ward and my condition rapidly improved (because they had other medications that weren't available at the local hospital).

I was taking my pred 20mg in the morning and 20mg in the afternoon. It was terrible, sleep basically didn't exist for me. I could only get 2 hours of sleep and then be up at 4 or 5 in the morning wide awake and up for the rest of the day. Even though my body was dead and I had no energy, I couldn't sleep. I started taking all 40mg in the morning and now I can sleep better. I still have bad night sweats though, cannot find a way to lessen that. Wake up twice a night soaking in sweat.

Thanks for all the replies everyone it is very encouraging, so far no pain today and have had only one trip to the bathroom with a very small bowel movement, if tonight goes well I will continue to take the prednisone in the mornings. I am eating smaller, simple meals and it seems to be having a very positive effect on me (such a nice change from the hospital food), gonna keep up a daily schedule with the 4 meals of all natural foods: no gluten, no dairy, no sugar and no processed food. Have been walking out in the fresh country air and taking things slow and it has made my day very enjoyable after being in the hospital for 4 days. Having some swelling occur from the steroids on my lower body but nothing too serious, really hoping for a good nights rest tonight but time will tell! thank you everyone for your support!!! Will continue to update and show how the progress is =)
