I'm a little scared today. Although Tylenol did help me sleep all night without taking the diluated in the middle of the night.

But today my rectum is hurting me. It has been becoming more noticeable over the last couple of days. I get some mucus out of it, but nothing bad. I'm trying suppositories for any swelling. I'm worried that my colon might have made it bad. I don't know what I'm talking about. I just don't know if I should be worried or not.

Can the rectum go bad?

Please help, I have another week before I see the dr.

Hey halo, This is probably a better question for the ostomy forum. I would imagine what you're experiencing is normal. It is a huge surgery and recovery takes a while. It's only been a week. I think you can expect some pain and awkward unexpected sensations. Hopefully sue or pluot see this, they both post often and have been through surgery. Can you call your doctor's office and speak to someone about your concerns?

Yes, of course. It's called proctitis. Usually they remove the rectum and just leave a cuff and anus. I may be using the wrong words, I am not that well versed with surgery terminology.

Thank you so much. That matches it perfectly. I've complained of the rectal pain, but none of the doctors addressed it. I was surprised they left the rectum when they took out the colon. I guess I will have to make them address it at my appt.

Are you having a three step surgery? The rectum isn't removed until step 2 if there are three steps. It's much harder to remove the rectum because it's in the pelvis (harder to access) instead of the abdomen. It is totally normal to have continuing inflammation in the rectum between steps. You will probably pass some mucus, possibly even bloody mucus, from your bottom. Usually removing the colon makes the rectal flare less severe but there are no guarantees (I had pretty severe inflammation in the rectum between surgeries, so I ran fevers, passed bloody mucus a few times per day, etc). You can try Canasa or just leave it alone, either way it's worth a chat with your surgeon.

Since UC starts at the rectum, it only makes sense that you'd have inflammation still there if it wasn't removed. Or are you meaning the anus?

Good you're using rectal meds...hopefully it'll help get you though this period.
I also suggest to discuss it with your surgeon for clarification as to what/why it's happening and what's next in the surgery process.

Thanks Liz for the explanation...I didn't realise that's the process of a 3-stap, but makes sense.

Halo,

I am having the same issue, talking with my surgeon it didn't seem too big of an issue to him, he said that I could use Canasa if I wanted to (which I chose not to, I like being medicine free). I'm only having to go once a day or every other day but there is some blood. The first week or two after surgery I was going about twice a day.

I just had my annual physical last week and my Sed Rate was at 7, before the surgery it was above 60 so the inflammation is gone even though I'm having the same issue that you are having.
