Penicillin and UC

Hello everyone, just had a quick question regarding penicillin. My PCP just told me I have a bad case of strep throat and gave me a 10 day supply of penicillin VK but to be honest I am scared to take it cause of all the horror stories I have heard regarding antibiotics and UC. Has anyone had any experience taking it, I guess i should continue taking my probiotics VSL#3 with this but does anyone have any advice, experiences etc?
I am currently not in a flare but always feel like im right on the cusp of one. Taking 4 Lialda pills a day

Be sure to take your probiotics at least two to three hours before or after the penicillin, so they can be effective before the Pen gets to them. I always keep a supply of Imodium around, and will ask my doctor for a small number of Lomotil tablets just in case when taking antibiotics. It usually takes a week or two for my colon to get back to its remission state after antibiotics.

Not taking the Penicillin could result in something much worse that a UC flare - strep can cause heart valve damage if left untreated.

i was on penicillin and flagyl in october for my appendicitis. i had a lot of diarrhea once i started it (going about 12x a day) but it stopped once i was off of it. it really helped my appendix while i was on it though.

Yes. Many people actually have a very small amount of the C-Diff bacteria but your "good" bacteria keep it in check. UC'rs often have a bacterial imbalance which makes it easier for the C-Diff virus to grow in larger numbers and actually give you a full blown C-Diff infection.

Gary, ampicillin is infamous for causing diarrhea, even in those with "normal" colons. If it gets too bad, ask your doc to prescribe a different antibiotic or try some Lomotil.

Don't know what happened buy my diarrhea up and disappeared. Maybe it was the Immodium. I also started a quick burst of prednisone. Today has been a great day for UC but still having pain from my UTI.
