Anyone suffer from painful, dry, cracked hands in the winter?

Thanks! I get cracks in the skin at the "corners" of my nails, mostly on my thumbs. It hurts! Eucerin cream plus the cotton gloves help a lot, but I might give this stuff a whirl to see if it works better.

Huh - Thanks for posting. I have this stupid paper cut on the tip of my thumb that refuses to heal. Been about 3 weeks now and its actually quite painful. Keep catching and opening all the time as you mention.

I'l check out the product. Been trying everything with no success.

I've had good results with Jergens Ultra Healing lotion. My feet really need gobs of it year round! RE bag balm: Ledaebel recommended it yrs back on a thread about treating anal irritation. (Lol.) / Old Hat (33 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I've had eczema my whole life, especially on my hands. The cracks at the corners of the fingernails are the WORST.

I've tried a lot of products, and for me, I like Burt's Bees hand salve the best. I'll soak my hands in hot water for a minute or so, then use the salve. It's pretty oily, but after a couple of minutes it soaks right in (especially after soaking) and isn't oily anymore. I try to repeat this at least two or three times a day.

I also use liquid bandage on the cracks. It helps the cracks heal a little faster, I think, but it really helps with the pain.

I've had this problem since I was 20. Long before I contracted colon cancer and needed a resection at age 43. At 20 I went to work for a large medical practice, and we had to wash our hands 10-15 times a day. The doctors used an excellent liquid white cleanser, but still our hands would dry out (this was 1975-85). I also developed eczema at times too. What fun for a young girl (I'd trade that girl my problems now though!). This cracking and splitting problem has never really gone away, I'm 58 now. After my resection and ostomy takedown, I noticed my hands were at their worst in the winter, I know since I have multiple bm's per day I retain vitamins and nutrients for short periods, I am now on excellent, liquid vitamins. And yet the problem is bad if our winter if frigid (which it is this winter).

I've used liquid bandage (Nexcare in the square bottle is my preferred brand, it doesn't sting).

The problem I have with cotton gloves is that once you put on the lotion or ointment, whatever it may be, the gloves pull this off my skin as I pull them on to sleep in and then at times I've taken these off in the middle of the night without realizing I need to wear them.

Well as you can see this is a minor problem compared to bowel issues but it's a chronic problem for me and when I discovered a new product that seems to help, I had to share my good news.

Last night I went to sleep with it on and it did sting several deep open cuts, but I ignored the stinging and fell asleep. The cuts are now 50% healed over. I am glad I didn't wash off Working Hands.

I suffer with this too, it's because we crap so much and therefore wash our hands so much and winter cold weather on top of that just builds the perfect conditions for this issue...try using hand cream after every hand washing, it makes a world of difference and wear gloves when you're out in the cold, I always put hand cream on before I put my gloves on to go out and it's also a big help.

i ended up coating my hands in vaseline last night before bed. i put a pair of latex gloves on and in the morning, my hands looked so much better. not so lobster red anymore.

i actually looked terrifying when i went to bed last night. purple gloves, toothpaste on my pimples, and my scented yellow eye mask.

If you get very red hands that dry and flake in a scaly fashion, I think you have something else going on...I had/have something like this...the closest I could come to identifying it is something called dermatomyositis. My hands have gotten much better since I've been taking vitamins.
