SCD isn't an elemental diet.
An elemental diet is one where the nutrients are broken down into their simplest forms (eg proteins into amino acids), so that everything is absorbed in the stomach and upper small bowel and bypasses the lower GI tract entirely. It's also known as gut rest.
It works quite well for Crohn's, and is a good alternative to steroids for children. However, it doesn't work nearly so well for colitis. That said, I still gave it a try: I think it just made me even worse. Whether it was lack of calories (I struggled to get down even half the recommended number of drinks each day) or something else, I also ended up becoming a mental case on it: it was just like being on steroids, except steroids didn't make me crazy.
The drinks were Elemental 028 if you want to look them up. Not fit for human consumption, imo.
PS: Consider a non-elemental liquid diet. Studies show that these are almost as successful as elemental diets (for Crohn's at any rate), but are about 5000x more bearable to follow. I did a liquid diet for a month, consisting of Fortisips (Ensure-type drink), peanut butter and banana smoothies, and soups. I got lots of calories on that, and didn't go nuts. Unfortunately it also didn't a lot for my Crohn's, 'cos I was in hospital a month later. Oh well... -_-
