OT: Is this appropriate behavior?

My boss celebrated her birthday last week and she thought this was weird. A single, male coworker had a $300 bottle of champagne sent to her. It wasn't from a group, just him. Here's where it gets strange - my boss is married to that coworker's boss! Sufficed to say, neither knew about the bottle of champagne.

She was curious what my thoughts were because I am a guy who is the same age as the champagne buyer. I really didnt know what to say. What does everyone think?

Maybe it's just social ineptitude, but nevertheless, weird is my vote.

Does he have a habit of trying to impress?

Maybe he's hoping for a raise??? lol But that does seem strange. Maybe he's hoping to impress her and she will go for him. Many single men try to get married women.

I interpret it as a friendly gesture. Giving champagne bottles as birthday gifts is a cultural norm in some places. The $300 dollar price tag, however, makes me think that the job is more than compensating enough. If not, then there might be some under the executable table stuff going on. ;0

Of course, the above is just my take on it :)

Don't know what the motive was but my guess is there was a definite motive involved.

It's never appropriate to give your boss (or your employee) an expensive gift like this, assuming it's a business relationship.

It is awkward enough to have backfired. Your boss's husband (his boss) may be thinking something inappropriate is going on.

Motive, nah, somebody is just screaming "you pay me too much" by giving a gift like that especially to a boss tongue
