Safest medications while nursing?

I made a decision on the direction to go. Thanks to those of you who gave helpful information.

I had to take pred while breast feeding my oldest because of an allergic reaction to the sticky sterile drape from my c-section(rash from just below my breasts to just above my knees).
I didn't have UC while I was breast feeding my boys but I am sure kellymom dot com has a link to drugs that are safe while bf'ing and I think dr jack newman's web page does as well. Good luck and I hope your flare is short lived!

I was on Asacol when I breast fed my daughter. I called the GI, the OB AND talked to a nurse at the manufacturers of Asacol and they all assured me that mesalamines are perfectly safe for nursing. Can you tolerate mesalamines? Have you tried steroid rectal meds? Or mesalamine enemas?

Like Sherry said, mesalamine is safe. There's been on reported case of bloody diarrhea in an infant whose mom was taking it, and that's it. I breasted my daughter until she was 5 months old -- I stopped because my supply dropped too low after I'd been back at work and pumping for a while.

Remicade is perfectly safe while breastfeeding too. Why not increase the dose and/or frequency of this med? I'm assuming you got to remi because you failed other options. You should also be using rectal meds, which will have no transfer to breastmilk.

I'm confused about why you are worried about Asacol and breastfeeding. Prednisone is a higher risk med than either the Asacol or the remi. Rectal meds are really the fastest way to remission. Are you able to use rectal meds?
