It certainly gives additional options to those that can't afford or tolerate mesalamines. Surely a much better tactic before doctors run patients straight to biologics or immunosuppressants. ;)
I suspect the reason probiotics are not mentioned in terms of efficacy vs mesalamines is that they are very cost effective. I know some studies use vsl #3 or mutaflor and many cannot afford those particular brands, but fermented and cultured products are just as therapeutic to the body. Obviously, no one is going to fund studies on fermented goodies ( we can just analyze populations that eat them copiously ).
Nevertheless, this is data that shire or salix pharmaceuticals would love to suppress if they could.
