bad breath and prednisone

could they be related?? i started getting bad taste in my mouth in the last week when i started the pred at 40mg. its been a while since ive been on it and i dont remember having that the last time.

I had prednisone that came from two different pharmacies. The first kind I used was fine. The second batch started started dissolving almost instantly as soon as I put it in mouth leaving a disgusting taste behind.

I have used other medicine such as Topamax and Ultram which both leave a weird taste in my mouth as a side effect - that did not seem to be related to the pills themselves.

Either way, drinking extra water seemed to help.

different time, different place cyn - pred affected me differently every time I took it -

are you talking about just a nasty taste for a short time after you take it, or is it a continual thing ?

Never heard that one before but it is theoretically possible. Prednisone weakens the immune system so it is remotely possible that that has caused bad breath germs in the mouth to profilerate more. I'm not making any bets on this idea though.

Prednisone loosens muscles and increases the likelihood that you will have gastric esophageal reflux, which can cause bad breath. Try taking a proton pump inhibitor like Prevacid while you're on Pred, eating small meals, elevating your head at night to keep stomach contents in your stomach.

it must be the pred cause this only started when i started the pred. soystud i get what you are saying cause i always have a different side effect everytime i take it. it comes and goes during the day. kinda weird.

Prednisone, and steroids in asthma inhalers, can mess with the natural balance of bacteria, yeast, and fungus that are part of your mouth's natural ecosystem. That can lead to an overgrowth of one particular variety of the above that may result in bad breath. Right after taking the steroid, it can helpful to either rinse your mouth out or brush right afterwards including your tongue and the sides of your mouth cheeks.

Also worth taking a look at your tonsils to see if you have stones. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you can look it up on YouTube, but don't say I didn't warn you :)

I had Thrush from Predisone, it turned my tongue white and made everything taste bad. I don't think that I had bad breath from it but I was brushing me teeth a lot, mouth-wash and taking medication for the Thrush.
