I'm speaking for my brother here who is 26 years old, trying to get feedback or similar experiences from internet community members.
-In the middle of Dec. 2013 my brother had rectal bleeding; noticed when wiped on toilet paper and the stool had changed the color of the toilet water to red, we thought it might be straining or hemorrhoids.
-He never had signs of stomach pains, pains when eating, vomiting or abdominal pain. He was always fine.
-I checked the stool it's soft; used stool softener until appointment with Primary Doctor.
-Undergoes Sigmoidoscopy procedure with biopsy, visually confirmed Proctitis by the GI NP and prescribed Canasa Suppository until we meet with a GI Doctor for followup.
-After doing the suppository for 3 weeks my brother reports to me the bleeding has stopped and no blood in the stool and the water doesn't turn red.
-Followed up with GI Doctor, biopsy was negative, stool sample was negative no helicobacter and he wanted my brother to undergo Colonoscopy to do a full check even though Canasa is working. Got a colonoscopy appt, continued Canasa until procedure day.
-My brother got his colonoscopy done and results came back with a Pancolitis. GI Doctor says I have to continue administering Canasa Suppository and given a new oral med Lialda Mesalamine Oral tabs x4 everyday.
The thing I noticed with my brother though is that he didn't show any signs or symptoms of Pancolitis way back to his Proctitis time just rectal bleeding treated with Canasa, WebMD said, "S/S are abdominal pains, bloody diarrhea, need to go to the toilet and weight loss."
I just can't understand how he got this condition, WebMD and the net says it's a chronic condition, it's autoimmune or inherited. After the colonoscopy he was just happy he can eat again after the two day torture of liquid and Colyte diet. We ate out and had a burger while taking prescribed mesaline oral meds, no pain, no vomiting or anything. I'm just trying to understand the situation he is in and trying to see ahead of this disease. Will my brother have to continue getting the meds forever as well?
Thanks for reading HealingWell Forum. I just need to make sense of it all. Maybe I should get a colonoscopy too for a checkup.
