This is absolutely no surprise:
"Patients with ulcerative colitis are willing to accept relatively high risks of fatal complications from medical therapy to avoid a permanent ostomy and to achieve durable clinical remission," the researchers concluded.

Well, it's difficult when your physicians are suggesting the meds and you have no clear way to understand things better than they do...

doesn't surprise me. I am not sure it makes sense but I would prefer to avoid surgery as well.

Yeah, I read about this a few weeks ago. Basically saying that patients preferred both medication and the j-pouch to having a permanent ostomy, so absolutely no surprises there.

No surprise. I chose the meds over jpouch surgery until my quality of life was so poor that I sought a surgical consult and my decision changed. I'm so glad this happened in the 90s before the biologics were introduced. I would have tried Remicade; in hindsight I'm so grateful it wasn't around then and my drug treatment ended at 6MP.

I thought the following sentence was very interesting:

"Surgery for ulcerative colitis, on the other hand, causes a permanent change in how a person's bowels function."

What in the heck do they think happens when UC without surgery changes how a person's bowels function?

The clue is in the word "permanent". UC can go into remission and normal bowel function can be resumed. If you have surgery, your bowel function is altered for life. It may be better than what you had before, but it will never be like having a healthy colon.

I guess the prevailing love for surgery around these parts is something that I'm never likely to experience, though.

I chose meds! Try not to think of the side effects. Not that surgery was ever an option.

I'm so happy I had surgery. It's wonderful not taking those drugs anymore. :)
