What in the heck do they think happens when UC without surgery changes how a person's bowels function?
The clue is in the word "permanent". UC can go into remission and normal bowel function can be resumed. If you have surgery, your bowel function is altered for life. It may be better than what you had before, but it will never be like having a healthy colon.
I guess the prevailing love for surgery around these parts is something that I'm never likely to experience, though.
