Stumbled on this today:
Retinoic acid suppresses intestinal mucus production and exacerbates experimental enterocolitis.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22563081
For those interested.

I've been using a Retinoid cream for 4 years...can the topical stuff cause problems as well?

There is at least one member here (whom I won't call out by name) who is involved in a lawsuit alleging that Accutane caused or contributed to their UC diagnosis. My understanding is that there are LOTS of these suits right now.

My son has Crohn's, he took tetracycline years before he was diagnosed but he didn't take it for very long, I think he had an allergic reaction to it. Never thought of a connection.
My daughter took accutane, no IBD symptoms yet.
I have UC, never took any of these, both my sisters took accutane, neither of them have IBD symptoms.
I've seen tv ads of lawyers who were involving people in lawsuits who have Crohn's and took accutane.
When my daughter was on it, I thought it was really wicked stuff.

I took tetracycline for years as a kid, orally and topically, though it never seemed to do a whole lot for my acne. It now seems to me a clear over-reliance on antibiotics. When I was in my mid-30's, after already having been diagnosed with UC, I did the Accutane treatment. It worked great.
