Ok,,,got a question for you all....My son has had colitis for over 10 years,,,and wondered if any of you collect Social Security disability..?? He is 46 and although the Remicade helps a lot...he stlll has morning pains and 4 or 5 trips to the potty before he feels "Safe" enough to leave the house,,, He isn't working now,,,and can't find a job that would be without being in traffic...He worked in the IT tech field before...

He would probably need to have a real good social security disability lawyer and know that it will be a fight to get it. Plus his doctor will have to be on board. Do a search on this forum because there have been discussions about this before. You probably can find some good info.

It's almost impossible to get SSI because most of us can find meds that help us plus the fact that surgery is a "cure", therefore he wouldn't need disability. Several of us have jobs where there is traffic involved plus possible accidents in the workplace and wear depends if necessary and bring along an emergency kit. SSI would be a real longshot. I feel for him with this disease but it kind of sounds like he has run up the white flag and is just giving up. He can work if he chooses to. Has he tried any probiotics, supplements, or diet changes?

If it's keeping him from having a life despite trying all the medications, it might be time for him to talk to a good colorectal surgeon about the risks and benefits of surgery. We have several members who have had colectomy and almost none of them regret it.

Yeah. It might be time to say he wants his life back and surgery can do that for him. Many people who have had surgery had one major regret from it - that they hadn't done it sooner. As far as foods go, for the most part, UC damages your colon, which causes certain food particles to escape the mucusal barrier, causing worse UC symptoms because the immune system is attacking the escaping food particles. By not eating the foods that do this to him, his condition can improve but this alone won't be a cure because it is not what caused his problem in the first place. I know a mother is always a mother and you wish there is something you could do for him but you can only do what he allows you to do and it is not in his overall best interest to use you as a crutch. After all, you are mortal and won't be around forever.

i tried and was denied. it's so hard to get even though i qualified under the "heath/illness" standards. i just hadn't put enough money into SS to get it and the office said i had to work more and then reapply which was impossible because i was going to the bathroom so much and could barely stand up from the anemia.

Banana, supplemental security income (SSI)might be something you could get if the disability was not in question and it was just a question of you no paying into the system long enough.

This is a tough situation and I feel for all of you in this boat. Can your son possibly do some work at home IT gig? There are consulting companies that look for people for short or long term work at home in IT. I WFH in healthcare IT - might be more open to this than other fields. My client knows I have UC and I have proven to them that I am actually working when I WFH (they just canned a guy who was not available when he was WFH....)

What about long term disability, if you cannot work and paid for the insurance do you not get the government money?

I did the social security thing in 1990 and it was a bit of a nightmare. Like people have said on here it is a downer to not be working, and anything is better than receiving social security.

It was really difficult to get and I needed a lawyer. It was denied the first time and accepted the second. What happened with me is I got to the point where I felt comfortable working part-time and I was still receiving social security. I didn't give it much thought or feel it mattered until I got a bill from the government for about $4500.00! I remember going down to their office with my dad and he talked them down to about half of that amount based on the fact that I was never really well when I was working.

The 4 or 5 times in the morning is very typical with this condition. As long as he gets a job in an office or a place with bathrooms he will be fine. My job (like most jobs) entails some travel from time to time and you just get used to eating less and taking lots of medication during those times. You can always eat less days before and eat carefully. You just learn to prepare in advance to get through work.
